Describes, by first-hand account, the Malawi gravity water system and the components applicable for other rural countries in their own self-help water development programs. Discusses two fundamental prerequisites necessary for success in these programs: that they be given adequate time to grow from pilot to full-scale schemes; and that they must be village-based from the beginning-- through construction-- to long-term operation and maintenance.
