SATURDAY 17. A court marshal was held for determining the merits of the difputed honour of heading the troops at St Cas, after the death of colonel Dury. The officers that claim this honour are the colonels Cary and Lambert.

TUESDAY 20.

At a general court of the fociety for the free British fishery, it was debated whether the trade fhould be carried on for the enfuing year, as their loffes were found to be fo great the laft year. But the question being put, it pass'd in favour of carrying it on, and a call of two per cent. upon the proprietors was agreed to for that purpofe. The ufelcfs buffes and ftores, cordage, nets, falt, &c. were alfo directed to be fold by the council; and it was left to their difcretion to fit out as many buffes this year as the call of 2 per cent, and the produce of the fale of buffes, could conveniently furnish.

WEDNESDAY 21.

The Arc-en ciel was ordered to be refitted at Chatham. All the men of war that arrive there are to be fumigated, or fmoaked; which is done by firft cleanfing them well from ballaft, dirt, &c. and then caulking in the port, and covering all the hatches clofe with tarpaulins, tubs, buckets, &c. being filled with pitch, tar and rofin, red Hot irons are put therein, which causes a smoke that penetrates into every crevice, and not only takes off any infection, but deftroys the rats and all other vermin; and afterwards they are well washed with vinegar, fuch is the care now taken in the navy to preserve mens lives.

THURSDAY 22.

Capt. Parker, of the Montague, gives an account that he had taken the marquis du Marigny, belonging to Granville, mounting 20 fix pounders, and having 194 men on board, alfo the Hardimentiant of Dunkirk of 6 guns and 60 men.

Capt. Graves, of the Unicorn has alfo taken the Moras privateer of St. Maloes, of 22 guns, and 202 men.

But the gen. tlemen in the neighbourhood, having a strong fufpicion, fecured her, and upon examination fhe confeffed the fact. The Coroner's inqueft have brought in their verdict Wilful murder against her. and the is committed to the New Gaol in Southwark.

A List of DEATHS for the Year 1759.

called Argyll's Hoft. In the year 1680, he was at London a fervant to Sir Robert Dixon, and could give a particular defcription of the court, palaces, &c. at that time. In the year 1681, he went north from Edinburgh, with George Brodie, then of Aflick, afterwards of That Ilk, and ferved that Gentlenian as long as he lived, as he did his fons, James Brodie, of Brodie, Efq; and the late Lord Lyon, who always took the greatest care of him. He enjoyed an uninterrupted ftate of health, had always an uncommon flow of fp.rits, and eat very heartily. Till very lately he could drink a Scotch pint (two Winchefter quarts) at one draught. He loved to go to weddings, where there were mufick, dancing, and drink; but feldom or never fhewed the least inclination to go to church.

At Rome Cardinal Guadagni died the 12th of January laft in the 84th year of his age, very poor, his fortune (which he hath bequeathed to the Confervacy of St. Pafcal) amounting to but 12,000 crowns, befides the money he had fet apart for charitable ufes during the month of February, which he has ordered by his will to be given to the poor, and a few fmall legacies to the barefooted Carmelites. He has left M. Guadagni his nephew, only a filver vafe, and four fets of damask hangings. It appears by his Eminence's papers, that during the 27 years he was a Cardinal, he had given upwards of 240,000 crowns in alms and other charitable ufes.

At Paris, the Dutchefs of Orleans, aged 32, fhe was daughter of Louis Armand of Bourbon Conti, Prince of the Blood.

At Rome, Cardinal Doria, aged 50. He was railed to the Purple when he was about 35, by Pope Benedict XIV. and his death makes the 20th vacancy in the facred College.

It is obfervable, that on her reading the account of the Princefs of Orange's death, the faid with a figh, that he was happy in having had a few hours to recollect herself, and maku a proper provifion for her children; and add.J, that though the did not with for a tedious illness, the hoped the should not be called away fuddenly.

He fupported himself by begging near fifty years, and frequently took up his lodgings in a glafs-houfe, though he had a room at a houfe in Temple-ftreet; where, to the great furprize of every body, after his death,
