It is understood, that Dr Gavin Gibb, one of the ministers of Glasgow, will be proposéd as Moderator of the General Assembly, in May next.

Alexander Maconochie, Esq. his Majesty's Lord Advocate of Scotland, is returned Member of Parliament for the burgh of Yarmouth, in the room of Richard Wellesley, Esq. who has accepted the Chiltern Hundreds.

On Monday, March 3d, Dr Lee, Professor of Church History, was elected Rector of the University of St Andrew's.

The Prince Regent has (at the unanimous request of the Town-Council and a great majority of heritors) presented Mr Chalmers, preacher of the gospel, (assistant to the celebrated Dr Chalmers of Glasgow), to the second charge of the parish of Dunfermline, vacant by the death of the Rev. John Fernie.

The Marquis of Abercorn has been plea. sed to present Mr Patrick Brewster to the second charge of the Abbey parish of Paisley, vacant by the death of the Rev. James Smith.

Sir John H. Dalrymple has presented the Rev. Mr Welsh to the church and parish of Heriot, Presbytery of Dalkeith, vacant by the death of the Rev. Mr Hunter.

Upon the 17th of January last, the Marischal College of Aberdeen conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Medicine on George Wood, Esq. Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and apothecary to his Majesty for Scotland.

The Associate Presbytery of Edinburgh, at their meeting in Bristo-Street on Tuesday March 4th, ordained the Rev. William Bell as minister to the Scotch settlers on the River Ottawa, in the province of Upper Canada.

8. At Pisa, Francis Horner, Esq. M. P. He had been for a considerable time in a declining state of health, and had retired to Italy for the benefit of a milder climate; but the malady to which he fell a sacrifice had unhappily gained too firm a hold of his constitution, and although flattering hopes were entertained by his friends, it continued gradually to undermine his health, until he sunk under its influence, in the prime of his days, and in the full maturity of his talents. Mr Horner, while he claimed the admiration of his friends by the preeminent qualities of his mind, was no less endeared to their affections by his private virtues, and among all who knew him, and had access to appreciate his great talents and amiable dispositions, the intelligence of his death excited one general sensation of the deepest regret. 24. Helen, daughter of John Burness, crofter, Thornton; on the 2d curt. William his son, and on the 3d, James: the two sons were both interred in one grave. They all died of a putrid fever, after a few days illness.
