Geschiedenis van de Joodse gemeenschap in de Pekela's, 1683-1942, Volume 1

A study of Jewish life in the northeastern part of the Netherlands, in two villages - Oude and Nieuwe Pekela and environs. Archives mention the settlement of the first Jew in 1683, the foundation of the Jewish community in 1725, and a synagogue in 1737. Pp. 26-33 discuss several local regulations from 1754, 1765, and 1774 which restricted the settlement and trade activities of Jews. Pp. 57-60 sketch the foundation of the organization Felix Libertate 1795, which strove for equality of Jews and non-Jews. After the acceptance of formal equality on 2 September 1796, Jews received the right to vote. However, until 1802 Jews were obliged to request permission to settle in the Pekelas. Pp. 173-178 sketch the World War II period, in which 123 Jews were deported and 11 Jews survived in hiding. Deals with reports by Abraham Toncman, Jewish teacher and secretary of the board, written between July 1940-December 1942.
