THIS volume has been compiled and prepared for publication by the undersigned, to whom the duty was intrusted by the Executive Committee of the New-York Historical Society. Various circumstances-prominent among which may be named the engrossing, and now successful, efforts to ensure the completion of a fire-proof building for the use of the Society and the safe keeping of its Library and Gallerieshave retarded the action of the Committee on Publications. It is confidently believed, however, that no such causes of delay will hereafter occur; and that when the Society shall at length be happily established in its permanent and convenient home, its series of collections will begin, and continue to be, regularly, as well as rapidly issued. The first volume of the second series of the collections of the Society was issued in the year 1841 :-the second followed it in 1849. Like its predecessors, this third volume is devoted to the illustration of the Dutch period in our History; that is, to the years between the discovery of the State in 1609, and its surrender to the English in 1664, when its name was changed from "New Netherland" to "New York." The fourth and the fifth volumes-which will complete the second series-are intended to contain a full and accurate catalogue of the Library, and are now in press. |
