Chinesisches Drama! und chinesischer Roman! was mögen sie wohl für neue Langeweile bringen, rufen die meisten Leser von Komödien, Tragödien, Novellen und Romanen aus, und nicht mit Unrecht, wenn sie an chinesisches Drama und chinesischen Roman dieselben Forderungen, wie an die europäischen Erzeugnisse dieser Dichtungsarten stellen. Leser, die außer der Berwicklung der Begebenheit, den Motiven der Handlung und der Charakteristik der Helden, Drama und Roman noch als treues Sittengemälde des Volkes, dem sie angehören, ausprechen, dürften schon leichter zu befriedigen seyn, besonders wenn sie die Sakontala, den Wolkenboten, Wilson's Theater der Hindu mit Interesse gelesen haben, und wenn ihnen das von Goethe der ersten ertheilte schöne Lob aus dem Herzen geschrieben ist. Juder und Chineser haben vor den gebildeten Völkern Vorderasiens, vor den Arabern, Persern und Türken, eine dramatische Literatur voraus, welche bey diesen bekanntermaßen ganz und gar leer ausgeht'; hingegen stehen die lyrischen Erzeugnisse der Ostastaten, in soweit dieselben bekannt sind, denen der Westasiaten an Kühnheit des Aufschwungs und Reichthum des Farbenschmelzes nach, und die zahlreichen, dem chine
