FIG. 1. a, a, the sartorius, is the longest muscle of the whole fabric: it is extended obliquely across the thigh from the fore part of the hip, to the inner side of the tibia. Its office is to bend the knee, and bring the leg inwards. FIG. 2. There are two pairs of oblique muscles; a, a, the obliquus capitis superior, arising from the transverse process of the atlas, and inserted into the occipital bone; b, b, the obliquus capitis inferior, arising from the spinous process of the dentata, and inserted into the transverse process of the atlas.
