AT THE LONDON COFFEE-HOUSE, LUDGATE HILL,

LONDON,

On WEDNESDAY, the 26th of March, 1851,

At ONE o'CLOCK precisely.

Ir may be safely affirmed, without risk of contradiction, that at no period in the history of British Literature has so important a Copyright Property been offered to public competition, whether viewed in regard to the number and variety of the Works themselves, to the different sizes and forms in which they have been brought out to suit the taste and fancy of all classes of readers, or to the unrivalled popularity which they have now for so many years maintained.

The magnitude of the sales of all the Editions of Sir Walter Scott's Writings, and the unceasing demand for them which still exists, are facts so familiar to the Trade and the Public, that they do not require to be noticed here. In order, however, to show that there is ample time and scope to develope still further the abundant resources of this valuable Property, and to render it a most desirable and advantageous acquisition to any Publishers of enterprise, it is right to mention that the Copyright of

"WAVERLEY" does not terminate for upwards of Five Years,

and that the Novels, as a whole, are protected for a period of upwards of Twenty Years.

**Particulars and Conditions of Sale may be had by intending Purchasers on application to the TRUSTEES of MR. CADELL, 31, ST. ANDREW SQUARE, EDINBURGH; Messrs. HOULSTON & STONEMAN, 65, PATERNOSTER ROW, LONDON; or

Mr. HODGSON, 192, Fleet Street, London.

Printed at 57, Skinner Street, Snowhill, in the City of London, by ELIEZER CHATER WILSON, of 6, Palmer Terrace, in the Parish of St. Mary, Islington; and published by SAMPSON LOW, of 14, Great James Street, in the Parish of St. Andrew, Holborn, at the Office, 169, Fleet Street, in the Parish of St. Dunstan in the West.-Saturday, March 15, 1851.

ALL NEW WORKS PUBLISHED IN GREAT BRITAIN,

The ANNUAL CATALOGUE, including Pamphlets, Single Sermons, &c. is now ready, price 2s. 6d.

MESSES. LONGMAN are about to publish, in a cheap but handsome form, some of the Essays from the "Edinburgh Review," commencing with Macaulay's WARREN HASTINGS; to be immediately followed by LORD CLIVE.

MESSES. SEELEY announce the MEMOIR OF THE LATE REV. EDWARD BICKERSTETH, by the Rev. T. R. Birks, in 2 vols. post 8vo. ; and a New Edition of Mr. Elliott's HORE APOCALYTICE, in 4 vols., to be published early in May.

MESSRS. NISBET AND CO. have in the press, dedicated by permission to Prince Albert, edited by the Rev. Samuel Martin, for the Young Men's Christian Association, THE USEFUL ARTS, THEIR BIRTH AND DEVELOPMENT, containing many articles by the Rev. R. Bickersteth, Dr. Hamilton, &c. &c. The whole to be enriched by many Illustrations.

The same publishers announce the WORKS OF LADY COLQUHOUN, uniform in size with her Memoir ;— and a COMMENTARY ON THE BOOK OF LEVITICUS, by the Rev. James Hamilton, D.D.

INTERNATIONAL COPYRIGHT WITH AMERICA.-It may be worth consideration, in the event of a visit during the next few months of many of our literary and scientific friends from America, whether some arrangements may not be made for prosecuting to success so desirable an object as the establishment of an international law for the benefit of the authors and publishers of both countries. The Editor of the “Publishers' Circular" will be happy to receive any communications and hints bearing upon this subject, as preliminary to the formation of a Committee or otherwise.

Ix recording the death of MR. SAMUEL BAGSTER, one of the oldest of the present race of booksellers, we would venture to offer a word in recognition of the deep debt due to himself and family for what they have done towards the circulation, and assistance rendered to the student and the Christian in the reading, of the Holy Scriptures. It is impossible to give an account here of all the labours brought to bear upon the various editions, and the various languages in which the Bible has been printed under the late Mr. Bagster's superintendence. It must be a great comfort to his surviving family to know that his has been, by God's mercy, a useful life.

THE WAVERLEY Sale, as might have been anticipated, brought together a large assemblage of Publishers, Printers, and Paper Makers, all equally curious as to the future owner of this extensive and valuable Property, and all doomed to the same disappointment: whether it was that the Trustees of Mr. Cadell's Estate were under the necessity of ascertaining beyond a doubt what is the real marketable value of the Property; or, whether it would not realise so much as they considered its value as a continued investment, for the family, we do not pretend to know, but it can never be expected to draw together again so numerous and so respectable a company, amongst whem certainly there were many qualified to judge of its value and able to become purchasers at a remunerative price. The Stock was put down to be taken by the purchaser of the Copyright at a valuation price of £10,109. 3s. and the Copyrights were eventually bought in at £13,500, the first bidding having been £5000.

On the 16th instant another valuable property will be submitted to competition, of hardly less interest to our numerous publishers-the CABINET CYCLOPÆDIA, originally commenced by Dr. Lardner. This work comprises 133 volumes, which include many copyrights of works by some of the greatest authors of the age, and offers an extensive range for speculation in reprints.
