LAW OF COPYRIGHT-MEETING AT THE HANOVER SQUARE ROOMS.-We have detained the publication of the CIRCULAR for a few hours, deeming it probable that our Subscribers would wish to have some information as to the result of the Copyright Meeting called for this day. The attendance was very respectable, but there were few of our larger publishers present. The advertisement calling the meeting recommended the adoption of measures for the promotion of "an equitable adjustment of British and Foreign Copyright." SIR EDWARD BULWER LYTTON, Bart. took the Chair at Two o'Clock, and opened the proceedings with a luminous speech, reviewing the whole subject. He was followed by Mr. BоHN, who, from printed copy, went over the proceedings from Court to Court, upon the point of right to print the Works of Foreign Authors, notwithstanding the assignment of any supposed property the author might have therein to any publisher for valuable considerations. The First Resolution was moved by Mr. ВOHN, seconded and strenuously supported by the Rev. Dr. WORTHINGTON, to the effect that the recent decision of the Court of Queen's Bench was calculated to injure both the British author and publisher, inasmuch as by recognising the validity of title to a foreign work by publishing it in this country prior to its appearance abroad, an obstacle is placed in the way of obtaining an international copyright, and our own authors deprived of all prospect of obtaining reciprocal rights in other countries. An Amendment was proposed to this resolution by Mr. ERNEST JONES, who most effectively commented upon the previous speeches, considering that by passing such a resolution as was proposed by Mr. BOHN we were setting an unworthy example to foreign countries, and concluded with a resolution declaratory of the satisfaction in the result of Lord Campbell's decision. The Amendment was upon division lost and the original Resolution carried, but not with a very numerous majority. The second Resolution, for the appointment of a Committee to carry out the objects of the first Resolution, was moved by Mr. GEORGE CRUIKSHANK, to which an Amendment was proposed by Mr. HENRY MAYHEW, deprecating the object of the meeting altogether, and attributing to those who had called it other objects than public good, but was called to order by the honourable chairman, who claimed the support of the meeting in his refusal to allow anything of a personal character or feeling to be called into action upon such an occasion. Although we do not anticipate any immediate good result from this meeting, we hail every thing that tends to bring the necessity of an international Copyright Law before our senators and the public with great satisfaction. THE LANSDOWNE SHAKESPEARE. In consequence of the great care and delicacy which is found to be required in the presswork of this beautiful volume, unique as a specimen of the art of typography, the publication will be unavoidably postponed for a few weeks. THE publication of the July Number of Dr. KITTO'S JOURNAL OF SACRED LITERATURE is unavoidably postponed. It will appear next month, with some alterations, which will make it more extensively useful. |
