AMERICAN PERIODICALS.

BIBLIOTHECA SACRA and AMERICAN BIBLICAL REPOSITORY, for January. 8vo. pp. 234. Published Quarterly, 6s.

These two Journals are now united, and it

will be the constant aim of the Editors to obtain Essays and Discussions of sterling and permanent value, so that complete sets of the work will be regarded as an important accession to any library.

Articles will be sought on topics which will be viewed

as valuable twenty or even fifty years hence, in prefe

rence to those of local, temporary, or merely popular

character. The publication will embrace Theology in its widest acceptation, as comprehending the Literature of the Scriptures, Biblical Criticism, Natural

and Revealed Theology, Church History, with the History of the Christian Doctrines, and Sacred Rhetoric. Special prominence will be given to Sacred Literature. Particular facilities are supplied by American Missionaries resident in Syria and Western Asia, and by travellers in the East. Each Number will contain a Biographical Memoir. One of Dr. Neander, by a Pupil, will appear in the April Number. Questions in Mental and Moral Philosophy will be discussed to a limited extent.

Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity.

By Richard Hooker. The First Book. 1s. 6d. **The present reprint of the First Book of Hooker's large treatise was proposed by the Editor-a master in a large public school-with the view of reading it with his boys. There is, so far as he is aware, no English book in common use in schools which at all sets forth the distinctions of Laws and the foundations on which their authority is based, and perhaps none could be found better calculated to meet this want than that which is here offered.

"Amongst the many volumes which the recent Roman Catholic movement has called into existence, this work of Dr. Achilli's is likely to obtain the most permanent popu larity. As an able and lucid digest against Popery,-as a graphic description of many of the practices of the Romish Church, and as the record of the experience of a vigorous and enlightened mind, the work is one of the most valuable which the subject has called forth....There is, however, in the generalities of our author's account, a truthfulness, a knowledge and mastery of his subject, and opportunity of observation, which will go far to make his volume a standard work in defence of the principles of Protestantism."-ATLAS.
