6 BUCK (Samuel and Nathaniel) VIEWS of RUINS of CASTLES and ABBEYS of ENGLAND, Parts I-XIII complete, comprising 336 finely engraved copperplates (including 24 large folding views), in 4 vols. oblong folio, old mottled calf cxtra (SOUND SET); rare, £30

1721-38

Buck's collection is among the most valuable of the series of views taken in the Eighteenth Century, when so many important buildings now destroyed were still extant, and many others now greatly altered were, however ruinous, in their original condition. Their accuracy is such that they can be used to prepare a trustworthy restoration of any building they depict, and the high character of the engraving gives them much merit as specimens of the art itself.

The above series embraces the following counties:-York, Lincoln, Nottingham, Lancaster, Chester, Derby, Durham, Northumberland, Oxford, Warwick, Northampton, Cambridge, Huntingdon, Bedford, Buckingham, Leicester, Rutland, Salop, Stafford, Worcester, Hereford, Berks, Gloucester, Wilts, Monmouth, Somerset, Dorset, Southampton, Cornwall, Devon, Kent, Sussex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex.

The earliest Cards are those of GREGORY SHEPPARD, Stationer, at the Bible and Crown in Smithfield, near the Bear and Ragged Staff Inn, near Long Lane, London, not dated, but probably before 1600; ROBERT PASKE, Stationer and Agent for Ogilby's Atlas, in early penmanship style, dated 1670; DAVID MORTIMER at ye Sign of Erasmus's head, with fine portrait of Erasmus, engraved by STURT (ob. 1730); WILLIAM HOGARTH, engraved by himself, dated 1720; R. RACKSTROW, FrameMaker, engraved by COPLAND, 1738; HENRY JEFFEREY, Bookseller at Pope's Head, portrait of Alexander Pope in ornamental cartouche, dated 1752; WILLIAM SANDBY, Temple Bar and Cheltenham, and his Successor JOHN MURRAY, 22 Fleet St., the founder of the present famous house, both cards having the same sign, a full-rigged ship under all sail, enclosed in a Chippendale cartouche.

The most ornate, though perhaps not the most artistic example, is that of JOHN SMITH, the famous Engraver (ob. 1742), reproduced in the present catalogue.

The FRENCH CARDS include the pretty little Ticket of BASAN, the Engraver; LEVIEZ, a fine Chippendale Cartouche of the XVIIIth Century; C. CHRETIEN DE MECHEL, Basle, in charming Boucher style (SEE REPRODUCTION) and a curious large plate of Gersaint after BOUCHER, dated 1740.

The Fancy Subjects include a number of very charming figure subjects in the BARTOLOZZI STYLE, notably the Cards of ACKERMANN, EZEKIEL, ORME, J. SMITH (engraver), etc.

The EXTERIOR VIEWS include CRAWFORD'S LIBRARY, Brighton: WILLIAMS'S LIBRARY, Ryde, Isle of Wight; STOCKDALE'S premises, etc.

There are a few fine interesting early LITHOGRAPHS.

J. SHOVELLER (early Nineteenth Century) advertises printing in colours'; while W. OWEN, Bookseller, near Temple
