Of the above limited edition, only 400 copies were for sale, and the price of the final copies will be increased. 'Contrary to established principles (where Chess is concerned), Mrs. Baird's very handsome and imposing volume of 700 Problems has promptly made its appearance. We must regretfully content ourselves with giving a few examples; obviously detailed criticism of such a work is out of the question. Mrs. Baird stands alone. She is personally immensely popular and exceedingly gracious, and the purity of her work is in suggestive harmony. We refer now especially to the absence of duals and short mates, and the general soundness of the whole set. A very limited edition--400 only are for sale-will probably by no means cover expenses; but copies ought soon to be at a premium.'— Times. MRS. BAIRD'S REMARKABLE NEW CHESS BOOK :

The TWENTIETH CENTURY RETRACTOR, CHESS FANTASIES, and LETTER PROBLEMS, being a Selection of Three Hundred Problems, enriched with SHAKESPEARIAN QUOTATIONS, finely printed on toned paper within ornamental borders, with phototype portrait, impl. 8vo. cl. gilt, g. e., 10s 6d 1907

'Mrs. W. J. Baird's collection of 300 Chess problems: 'The Twentieth Century Retractor and Chess Novelties', is one of the most handsome and attractive volumes we have met with for some time. As the inventor of what is known as the Twentieth Century Retractor, Mrs. Baird occupies a unique position in the problem world, and this volume contains two hundred of these fascinating problems, each headed by an appropriate Shakespearian quotation, and the name of the paper or magazine in which it was first published. The remaining 100 consist of various letter problems and direct mate fantasies, arranged in the same way. All through the book one problem only is given on each page, and the result is a work of which the talented authoress may feel justifiably proud. In the preface Mrs. Baird refers to this collection as her labour of love, and also her swan-song bidding good-bye to all friendly solvers; but we can assure her that the chess world can ill afford to lose yet any one capable of such work as this volume reveals.'Times Chess Editor,

'The aim of this work is threefold: to present as complete a record as is possible of the varieties of chess which exist or have existed in different parts of the world; to investigate the ultimate origin of these games and the circumstances of the invention of chess; and to trace the development of the modern European game from the first appearance of its ancestor, the Indian chaturanga, in the beginning of the seventh century of our era.'-Preface.

It is mainly based on original researches by the author, assisted by Mr. JOHN G. WHITE, of Cleveland, Ohio, who put his library unreservedly at the author's service.

Grätz, 1811 A RARE WORK on the Styrian cuisine, which has quite distinctive features from that of other parts of the Austrian monarchy, where some of its characteristic dishes (viz., Sterz, the Styrian porridge)—to say nothing of arsenic-eating to improve the complexion !—are utterly unknown.
