'To Wilkie Collins, 'This set of the Library Edition of my books. with affectionate regards. In remembrance of The Lighthouse, The Frozen Deep, and much more. Charles Dickens.'-Inscr. on embossed note-paper. A unique set of very great interest in connexion with the novelist's literary and social life, and a lasting memento of his intimate friendship with Wilkie Collins.

Their connexion is generally well known to most collectors, but the following résumé will possibly be of interest to some. Their association dated from 1851, which year marked an epoch in the career of Collins as a successful novelist : in 1852 he took part in the theatricals organized by Dickens at Tavistock House, and wrote for them 'The Lighthouse and The Frozen Deep', the latter being included in a series of performances given for the benefit of Douglas Jerrold's family. They toured together at various times through Switzerland and Italy, Paris, and the North of England-the latter being partly described in A Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices'. Collins contributed under Dickens's editorship to Household Words' and afterwards to All the Year Round', in which appeared his first great popular success 'The Woman in White'. He imitated Dickens by touring the United States and giving public readings, his short story The Frozen Deep' being the one generally chosen. He was very critical as to the 'Life' of his 'master', which he trenchantly calls 'The Life of John Forster, with occasional Anecdotes of Charles Dickens'. The much more' in the above letter doubtless refers to the several minor works in which Dickens and Collins collaborated, and to the pleasure derived from their associated tours. The following excerpt from D. N. B. emphasizes the mutual imaginative reaction at work between the two friends:

'The influence of Dickens is very clearly traceable in Collins's work, yet there is reason to believe that Collins had nearly as much influence upon the latest works of the great writer as Dickens had upon him. Dickens longed to shine as an elaborator of plots, while Collins, the past master of the plot, aspired to be a delineator of character and to produce didactic fiction and reformatory romance after the Dickensian model'.

It was while acting in Wilkie Collins's 'Frozen Deep' that Dickens first conceived the main idea of his 'Tale of Two Cities'.

Had Dickens and Collins worn the buskin instead of wielding the pen they would have been two of the best actors of their time.

This half red morocco binding was a style specially chosen by Dickens for such of his books as he presented to his most intimate friends-the 13 vols. which he gave to MRS. WINTER (DORA), on the renewal of their friendship in 1855, each inscribed 'Charles Dickens-To Maria Winter, in affectionate remembrance of old times!' were bound in the same way, and passed through the advertisers' hands some few years ago.

506 DAVID COPPERFIELD, first edition, with etchings by H. K. BROWNE ['PHIZ'] 8vo. hf. morocco (plates somewhat stained), PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE HON. MR. AND MRS. RICHARD WATSON (to whom the Book is dedicated) to MARY BOYLE, with her bookplate Marye Boyle, HER BOKE', and arms, £21. 1848

[ocr errors]

The inscription is in the following form: Mary Boyle, Nov. 1850,' is written in the top left-hand corner of the dedication page, and 'The gift of' in front of the printed line of the dedication containing the names of the Hon. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Watson.

Dickens first met the Watsons at Lausanne in 1846, and the extent of his friendship may be gauged by the fact that he dedicated his most favourite book, 'David Copperfield', to them. He was a frequent visitor at their great Northamptonshire place, Rockingham Castle, certain features of which he reproduced in the Chesney Wold of 'Bleak House'. It was there that he first met Miss Mary Boyle, a cousin of Mrs. Watson, and an amateur Actress, both she and Georgina Hogarth taking part in the theatricals got up by Dickens, which were afterwards repeated publicly for charitable purposes. In a letter to Bulwer Lytton, Sept. 30th, 1850, Dickens described Miss Mary Boyle as the very best actress I ever saw off the stage, and immeasurably better than a great many I have ever seen on it.'

507 SKETCHES by BOZ, first octavo edition, with 40 plates by G. CRUIKSHANK, 8vo. hf. red morocco, g. e., PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by Dickens' youngest brother, 'Augustus N. Dickens, a wedding gift from his brother the author', £63. 1839

The signature of AUGUSTUS is perhaps the rarest of all the Dickens family Autographs. He was the youngest and favourite brother of Charles Dickens, who playfully nicknamed him Moses after the character in the Vicar of Wakefield, this, facetiously spoken through the nose, became Bozes, was afterwards contracted to Boz, which Dickens immortalized by adapting it as his nom de plume. By reason of his subsequent career Augustus became a thorn in the side of Charles Dickens, who had to disown him as a brother.

PRIVATELY PRINTED LETTERS OF CHARLES DICKENS: 519 CHARLES DICKENS and MARIA BEADNELL ('DORA'): PRIVATE CORRESPONDENCE between CHARLES DICKENS and MRS. HENRY WINTER (born MARIA BEADNELL), the ORIGINAL of DORA SPENLOW in 'DAVID COPPERFIELD,' and FLORA FINCHING in LITTLE DORRIT' [compiled, with Explanations and biographical Notes, by JOHN HARRISON STONEHOUSE], edited by PROF. G. P. BAKER, with engraved title-pages, portraits and facsimiles, cr. 4to., original half vellum, with some MS. additions consisting of a transcription of Mr. Stonehouse's original titlepage, before it was altered as above, a few corrections and additions, and a note on the identification of the original of MR. WINKLE OF PICKWICK, established since the book was printed, £14. 14s

privately printed for Members of the Bibliophile Society, Boston [Mass.], 1908 The above is the most important contribution to Dickens literature of recent years, for it tells in his own words, and wlth great wealth of detail, the story of that period of his early life-the three or four years immediately before his sudden burst into fame-when he was the young lover of Maria Beadnell, the original of Dora, the child-wife of David Copperfield. The book is based on two distinct series of letters, addressed by Dickens to this lady. The first was written in 1833, just before the engagement was finally broken off-for upwards of 20 years afterwards the parties never met, or held any communication with one another. The correspondence was reopened in 1855, and is represented here by a series of long and most beautiful letters, revealing the story of a pure and life-long passion such as is unequalled in dramatic power and interest by any fiction invented by the novelist. The writer tells his old sweetheart that 'whatever of fancy, romance, energy, passion, inspiration, and determination belong to me, I never have separated, and never shall separate, from the hard-hearted little woman-you-whom it is nothing to say I would have died for with the greatest alacrity. You may have seen in one of my books a faithful reflection of the passion I had for you, and may have thought that it was something to have been loved so well, and may have seen in little bits of Dora' touches of your old self sometimes, and a grace here and there that may be revived in your little girls, years hence, for the bewilderment of some other young lover-though he will never be as terribly in earnest as I and David Copperfield were.'

[ocr errors]

In another letter he writes, 'I hope now you know me better you will teach her [Mrs. Winter's child] one day, to tell her children, in time to come when they may have some interest in wondering about it, that I loved her mother with the most extraordinary earnestness when I was a boy.'

The book also contains the first complete literary production of Dickens (hitherto quite unknown) in the shape of a long AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL POEM, entitled THE BILL OF FARE; founded on Goldsmith's two Poems, Retaliation and the Haunch of Venison; this describes by name and personal characteristics all the members of Dora's' family circle, from which Mr. Stonehouse has been able to identify the originals of quite a number of the characters in Sketches by Boz', and other of Dickens's works.

PRIVATELY PRINTED LETTERS OF CHARLES DICKENS: 520 THE DICKENS KOLLE LETTERS, edited by HARRY B. SMITH; SUPPLEMENTAL to the LETTERS from CHARLES DICKENS to MARIA BEADNELL, with 2 portraits and facsimile, cr. 4to., half vellum (limited to only 483 copies for the Members of the Bibliophile Society only), £6. 6s Boston [Mass.], 1910

The Letters on which this book is based were described by the compiler of the 'Dora' volume with a hope that they might still be in existence, and this actually led to their fortunate rediscovery in America and subsequent publication.
