This work embraces the whole science of war and fortification, and is used as the text-book of the French Polytechnic and military schools. It was composed in 1805 by Colonel De Vernon, of the engineers, and Professor of fortification at the Polytechnic school, by order of the council for the improvement of that school; and after being revised and approved by a board of the Marshals and ablest engineers, was, by order of the Emperor Napoleon, adopted as the text and class-book of the Polytechnic and military schools. It has been translated for the WAR DEPARTMENT, for the USE OF THE

MILITARY ACADEMY OF THE UNITED STATES. The surplus of copies not subscribed for by the War Department, are now offered to the army, navy, militia, and public.
