A BEAUTIFUL COPY, WITH THE PLATES DÉCOUVERTES':

212 [MONTESQUIEU (Charles de Secondat, Baron de)] Le TEMPLE de GNIDE, Nouvelle Edition; the text engraved throughout upon copper by Drouet with engraved title, front. containing medallion portrait of the author, and 9 other charming copperplates by N. Le Mire after CHARLES EISEN; a Large Paper copy, with a duplicate set of the 10 engravings (proofs before all letters and numbers) inserted (see below), impl. 8vo. SUMPTUOUSLY BOUND IN CRUSHED DARK BLUE LEVANT MOROCCO SUPER-EXTRA, richly and beautifully tooled on back and sides, doublé with red Levant morocco (richly tooled), silken flyleaves, joints, gilt edges, by LORTIC, within leather-lined cloth case, £95.

chez Le Mire, graveur, 1772

One of the most beautiful French illustrated books ever issued. The above copy is not only in exceptionally fine condition and in a binding itself a charming specimen of art, but also has four of the plates DÉCOUVERTES', including those pointed out by Cohen (Guide de l'Amateur de Livres à Figures), viz., front. and illustrations to the I. (mounted as usual) and III. Songs, and also one to Song IV, which was apparently unknown to him. Proofs before letters and numbers are very rare; indeed M. Cohen says: J'ignore si dans certains exemplaires de l'édition in-4, il se trouve des figures avant la lettre, mais tous ceux qui m'ont passé entre les mains, renfermaient les figures avec la lettre '; but they are trebly so when in the extra-state as above. Delberque's copy fetched 6100 francs, E. Martin's 7900 francs, and the present copy sold at Sotheby's for £106. A LARGE PAPER COPY OF THIS RARE WORK:

A remarkably fine Series of Portraits, temp. Louis XIV., including the rare portraits of ARNAULD and PASCAL, both of which were afterwards suppressed by the Jesuits, in their place being inserted the portraits and lives of THOMASSIN and DUCANGE.

As this copy agrees with the above description, containing all four portraits and lives, the plates would appear to be of the earliest impressions.

A long run of this absolutely invaluable journal. Founded by the RT. HON. It also gives week by week the most elaborate record of the prices of commodities, and of all chief stocks and securities, which alone renders it indispensable to everyone engaged in economical research.

day. The economical truths there contained were a sufficient
answer to all the interested partisans of error.'-Eclectic
