HISTOIRE DU SIÈCLE DE LOUIS XIV. EDITED WITH NOTES PHILOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL, INDICES, ETC. BY GUSTAVE MASSON, B.A. UNIV. GALLIC., OFFICIER D'ACADEMIE, AND G. W. PROTHERO, M.A FELLOW AND TUTOR OF KING'S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE. PART III. (CHAPTERS XXV-XXXVr.) BODLEIAN EDITED FOR THE SYNDICS OF THE UNIVERSITY PRESS. Cambridge: AT THE UNIVERSITY PRESS. UC ER2. London: CAMBRIDGE WAREHOUSE, 17, PATERNOSTER Row. 1882 [All Righis reserved.] PREFACE. THE present volume concludes our edition of Voltaire's 'Siècle de Louis XIV.' We have omitted the last three chapters, since, from the subtlety of the questions involved, and the manner of treatment, they appear unfitted for school use. A few other passages, unsuitable in a book designed for educational purposes, have been suppressed, without any damage, we believe, either to the sequence of the narrative or the completeness of the review. We have done our best to make it as complete as possible by adding a variety of historical and other tables. The biographical index contains references to all the persons mentioned in the notes and supplementary matter as well as in the text, and comprises a copious list of the memoirs, letters, pièces justificatives, etc. which illustrate so strikingly the reign of Louis XIV. GUSTAVE MASSON. |
