164 CAXTON (WILLIAM) THE CRONICLES OF ENGLAND, [Emprynted by me William Caxton in thabbey of Westmestre by London, Fynyshed and accomplyshed the viii day of Octobre, 1482, and in the xxii yere of the regne of Kyng Edward the fourth], folio, commencing on the fifth leaf of sig. C, and ending on the last leaf of sig. T, two leaves mended; with NUMEROUS MS. NOTES in a hand contemporary with the impression; and on the last leaf an account of the size of the volume, in the autograph of Mr. Jamieson, to whom it was presented by Earl Spencer in 1816; recently bound in red Turkey morocco gilt, EXCESSIVLEY RARE, £120.

1482

Only seven other copies are known, all imperfect, and only one of which contains the colophon as copied above. In the description of the Siege of Harfleur, occurs the following passage." And there he played at the tenys with his harde gonne stones, and they that were within the toune whan they sholde playe, theyr songe was well awey. And allas that ever ony suche tenys balles were made, & cursed a tho that werre bygan, & the tyme that ever they were borne."

165 CAXTON (W.) HERE BEGYNETH THE BOOKE OF FAYTTES OF ARMES & OF CHYUALRIE (by Cristine of Pisa), small folio, a very fine copy, quite complete, with the exception of the two leaves of table, which however have been supplied in facsimile by Harris, so beautifully executed as almost to defy detection, morocco super extra, tooled in the old style, gilt edges, by J. Clarke, EXTREMELY RARE, £250. Per Caxton (1489)

166 CAXTON (W.) CHRONICLES OF ENGLOND, small folio, EXCESSIVELY RARE, but deficient of several leaves (see MS. collation prefixed), morocco extra, gilt edges, by F Bedford, in the old style, £125.

W. de Machlinia, n. d. circa 1480

Only one perfect copy is known, that at Althorp, and of imperfect ones only three. 167 THORDYNARY OF CRYSTEN MEN. Fisher preaching to Henry VII and the other Mourners, beautifully inlaid, morocco extra, gilt edges, by F. Bedford, EXTREMELY RARE, £21. Wynkyn de Worde, n. d. (1509) 169 WHITINTONI (Roberti) Lichfeldiensis Vulgaria, et de Institutione Grammaticulorum opusculum, Lat. et Anglice, smallest 4to. woodcut border round title, wanting the last leaf, VERY RARE, £2. 16s

Wynkyn de Worde, 1520 170 SYMON (styled by himself "The Anker of London Wall, wretched Symon") The FRUYTE of REDEMPCYON, sm. 4to. woodcuts, fine copy, hf. morocco, £32. Wynkyn de Worde, 1532 Excessively rare, unknown to Lowndes, who mentions only an edition with signatures A to E, dated 1530, which is probably imaginary. This copy has signatures A to F. The only other editions known are those of 1514 and 1517.

171 [HIGDEN (DAN RANULPH, monke of Chester) POLYCRONYCON, (Englysshed by one Trevisa vycarye of Barkleye), folio, black letter, with some woodcuts, title in red, with woodcut of George and the Dragon, which is also on the last page, a very rare blank leaf between table and first leaf of text, fine copy in ancient calf binding, with the autograph of Lyverich Ffoster in 1545, £28. Southwerke, by my Peter Treveris, 1527 VERY RARE. There are very few specimens in existence of the typographical labours of Peter of Treves, who reprinted the above edition page for page from that of Wynkyn de Worde of 1495.

172 TYNDALE, otherwise called Hychins (Wyllyam) Obedience of a Christen Man, 12mo. title in facsimile, large copy in olive morocco, £9.

At Marlborow in the lade of Hesse by me Hans luft, 1528

It being desirable to keep the early English books together, even those printed on

the continent are inserted under the heading of England.

173 PROCESSIONALE ad usus insignis ecclie Sar. observandos accomodum, presertim in iis que in habendis processionibus ad cerimoniaru splendore faciunt imprimis opportunu, sm. 4to. printed in red and black, with woodcuts, and the Music throughout, calf neat, £50. Johannes Raynes, 1544

EXCESSIVELY RARE. Apparently only two other copies are known, one in the British Museum, the other in the Bodleian. Lowndes registers these as two separate editions, through an imperfect apprehension of the colophon in the Bodleian copy, which he or some one for him must have examined. The subscription states that this edition is reprinted with corrections (of course in London) by John Raynes, from the former edition printed by the widow of Chr. Ruremund (in Antwerp) sometime after

1528.

174 TESTAMENT (THE NEWE) in Englyshe (Tyndale's Version, edited by Sir John Cheke) and in Latin of Erasmus Translacion, sm. 4to. the English in black letter, the Latin in Roman type, (22 of Lea Wilson) fine copy, quite complete, with exception of title page, which is an admirable facsimile by Harris, old morocco, gilt edges, £28. Wyllyam Powell, 1549

At the end of the Testament follow "the Epistles taken out of the Olde Testament, which are red in the Churche after the use of Salysbury upon certayne dayes of the yeare." A worse copy, also with facsimile title, sold for £35. in Mr. Dunn Gardner's sale.

175 LATIMER (Bp. Hughe) Fyrste Sermon, Jhon Day, 1549-Seconde Sermon (with Sermous III. to VII. in the same volume), ib. 1549-2 vols. in 1, 16mo. BLACK LETTER, very fine copy in morocco extra, gilt edges, old style, ly Hayday, VERY RARE, £9.

This is the complete set of Latimer's Lenten Sermons, preached before Edward VI. in 1549. Utterson's copy fetched £6. 6s in 1857; from that time no other perfect

one was seen in the auction rooms until the above came into my hands at Sir William Tite's sale. The next which occurs will probably bring a still higher price than the

book is now marked.

176 TESTAMENT (Newe) wyth the Notes and Expositions of the dark places. therein (Tyndale's Version, Lea Wilson 30) sm. 4to. black letter, woodcuts, (including portraits of Edward VI. and of the Devil with the wooden leg at Matt. xiii.) title beautifully facsimiled by J. Harris, morocco super extra, gilt edges, by F. Bedford £21. R. Jugge, 1552 Very rare. Utterson's copy sold for £25. and Offor's (imperfect) for £22. 177 UDALL (Nycolas) Flowres for Latine Speaking selected out of Terence, 16mo. black letter, title mended and slightly cut in headline, red morocco, gilt edges, £3. 16s T. Marshe, 1568 178 ERASMUS, the Praise of Folie, Moriæ Encomium, a booke made in latine by that great clerke Erasmus Roterodame, Englished by Sir Thomas Chaloner, sm. 4to. black letter, outer margin slightly wormed, yellow morocco, joints, gilt edges, £7. 178 Cd T. Berthelet, 1519

The date given in the colophon is 1569, but it is probable that the right one is 1549, as printed on the title. The translator's preface is a sensible and entertaining composition. He admits having exercised a certain freedom in his version, as for instance, substituting native proverbs whenever an English rendering of the Latin aphorisms failed to express their force.

179 SURREY (Earl of) SONGES and SONETTES, written by the right honorable Lorde Henry Haward late Earle of Surrey, and other, small 8vo. black letter, a fine portrait of the author inserted, but the colophon in facsimile by Harris, red morocco, gilt edges, from Sir William Tite's sale, £50. Apud. Ricardum Tottel, cum privilegio imprimendum solum, 1557

Excessively rare edition of the only great English poet, who flourished between Chaucer's time and the age of Spenser and Shakspeare. There were three editions or rather three issues of this first edition printed in the same year. Of each of the first two only a single copy is known-both of them in public libraries. Of the above, which is the third, only one other copy is at present known; and that is in the British Museum. There was one sold at Bindley's auction, but considerably defective, for £17.; and another, a damaged copy, at the Heber sale, which fetched £15.; but both have now disappeared. The above volume brought £50. at the Tite sale. 180 PRESTON (Thomas) LAMENTABLE TRAGEDY mixed ful of pleasant mirth, conteyning the Life of Cambises King of Percia, small 4to. black letter, title and several leaves mended, and slightly cut in headline, red morocco extra, gilt edges, by W. Pratt, £7. 78 John Allde, n. d.

note by Mr. HalliBritish Museum is Shakespeare alludes There is also a copy

Excessively rare. The flyleaf bears the following Manuscript well. "Licensed to John Alde in 1569-70. The copy in the believed to be the only other known of this ed. by John Alde. to this interlude in the second Part of Henry the Fourth, II. 4." in the Bodleian. It is amusing that two Persian peasants, Hob and Lob, are made to talk in the Somersetshire dialect.

181 GOSPELS OF THE FOWER EVANGELISTES in the vulgar toung of the Saxons (with the English translation revised from the Bishop's Bible added, EDITED BY JOHN FOXE), sm. 4to. black letter, with the very rare dedication to Queen Elizabeth, slightly wormed in the bottom blank margin, fine copy, in the original vellum wrapper, £15. John Daye, 1571

A volume of extreme rarity, evidently never seen by Lowndes, as he states it to be dedicated to Archbishop Parker instead of Queen Elizabeth. Even in the XVIIth century the rarity of copies was so great that a former owner of Earl Spencer's copy, in a MS. note, records that "I was twenty yeares looking for to buy one of these bookes."

182 FENTON (Geffray) Form of Christian Pollicie, small 4to. black letter, in the original calf binding, covered with gold tooling, gilt gaufré edges, Archbp. Matthew Parker's copy, with his arms in gold on side, and his autograph on fly-leaf, £16. H. Middelton for R. Newbury, 1574

Lewis, £8. 158 J. Windet, 1591 186 SPENSER'S COMPLAINTS. Containing sundrie small Poemes of the Worlds Vanitie, small 4to. fine large copy in red morocco extra, gilt edges, by Riviere, £12. 12s W. Allde, for R. 1597

It were very desirable that some patient and competent scholar should endeavour to find out who was the author of this little volume. He was a man who had made his first attempts to win fame (probably not literary) on the death of his wife, and who, though new to the poetic art, is described by the printer as "an advocate worthy enough to be judge of the Muses' greatest contentions."

agus Mheinisdraldachda na Sacrameinteadh, [Book of Common Prayer, etc. in Irish Gaelic], sm. folio, woodcut on title, woodcut of arms on back of title and at end, blue morocco extra, gilt edges, by Bedford, £50.

Baile atha Cliath [Dublin] Seon Francke alias Franckton, 1C08 There is a copy of this volume in the Grenville collection, in the catalogue of which it is described as "exceedingly rare." Few volumes of the early Irish press can now be had, and there is none of them which equals in interest or surpasses in rarity the one above described. The only other book of any pretensions which had been printed in Dublin was a reimpression of the English Common Prayer, but the Liturgy in Irish is really the first important work of that press, and the very circumstance of its appearance in the native language (in which nothing of intrinsic valus had yet been produced), may be said to stamp it with the character of a national monument.

It contains the entire Law and Doctrine of that terrible tribunal, and is morcover the first work in existence which we know upon the subject.
