481 BRANT, Sebastian. Ship of Fools, translated by Alexander Barclay, being a Faithful Reprint of the Pynson edition of 1509, with introduction, notes, and glossary by T. H. Jamieson, illustrated with nearly one hundred and twenty quaint and interesting facsimile wood engravings from the Originals in the Basle edition of 149. Lond., 1874. 2 vols., cr. 4to, uncut. This is a reproduction of an extremely curious, interesting and once widely popular Satire, which, under the allegory of a ship freighted with fools of all kinds, held the mirror up to the prevailing vices and follies of every rank and profession at that imporant and suggestive period of history immediately preceding the Reformation. The text of Pynson's edition has been printed intact to preserve so interesting a monument of the English language. The illustrations will be found to have been reproduced with the utmost faithfulness, and their whole tone to be in perfect keeping with the originals. So valuable a contribution to the history of early wood-engraving and to the illustration of mediæval life and literature has seldom appeared.

sanguinary coward, Governor Kieft. The petition shows that three hundred of the Dutch colony had been slain, and one hundred carried away captives. So audacious had the fierce Indians become, that several of the Dutch had been killed on the island of Manhattan ; and on one occasion sixty-four canoes loaded with the savages had landed on the shore of the North river, and before daylight, had filled the streets of New Amsterdam. The first objects upon which the eyes of the astonished Dutchmen rested in the morning, were the crowds of savages to whose forbearance alone they owed their lives."- Field.
