This trial presents the first instance on record where truth was admitted as justification
of a libel, a doctrine since admitted in American jurisprudence. "The counsel
for the defendant was Andrew Hamilton, of Philadelphia, who, for the able de-
fense he made upon the occasion, was rewarded, by order of the Common Council
of New York, with the freedom of the city in a splendid gold box. The trial took
place in 1735." Rich.
