Vaca across the territory occupied by the Southern States from Florida to Texas in
the year 1527, nearly three and a half centuries ago, is full of the most melancholy
yet absorbing interest. Nine years of wanderings and captivity among the Indians
elapsed before this ill-fated member of a still more unfortunate band escaped almost
