NEW WORKS PUBLISHED BY LONGMAN AND co.
WORKS IN THE PRESS-CONTINued.
CHALMERS'S BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY. Re-edited and re-modelled throughout, so as to form an entirely new work.
**Messrs. LONGMAN AND CO. (sole proprietors of the copyright of this work) have made considerable progress in preparing a greatly improved Biographical Dictionary. The extensive additions and improvements of the late Mr. Chalmers, the result of seven years' assiduous labour, together with the Biographical articles written by professional gentlemen for Dr. Rees' Cyclopædia (also he sole property of Messrs. Longman and Co.) have been placed in appropriate hands. The whole will be revised and re-modelled, with all the necessary additions, in a style of composition suitable to the dignity of writers narrating the actions and performances, and passing judgment upon the characters, of the llustrious and distinguished individuals who will form the subject of its pages. The work will be on a compressed and not on an enlarged scale; but while the space allotted to each Life, according to its relative importance, will be fully sufficient to satisfy the intelligent reader, the number of volumes will not exceed the moderate means of purchasers.
All further particulars will be given as soon as the whole work is in that state of forwardness which will insure its uniform and satisfactory completion, in a reasonable time from the commencement of its publication.
A DICTIONARY OF SCIENCE, LITERATURE, AND ART, including all the Technical Terms in common use. In reading, or in conversation, subjects are frequently discussed, and terms used, with which few persons are familiar at the present period, too, when science has become of such universal interest, and when new inventions, founded on scientific principles, are almost every week brought under the notice of the public, a work wherein may be found information on all subjects, entirely to be relied upon, cannot fail to become extensively popular. This work is, in fact, intended to be a condensed and improved Cyclopædia, containing sufficiently extended information on all subjects, adapted for immediate use; each department being undertaken by gentlemen whose names will be a sufficient guarantee for their accuracy. The following gentlemen are engaged in this work :
