The title is enclosed in an illustrated border. This is the first edition of the whole Bible divided into verses marked by Arabic numerals. In the Old Testament the previously existing division in the Hebrew Bible is followed; but in the Apocrypha and the New Testament the division was made by Pagninus himself. It differs widely, however, from that now in use, his verses being twice or three times as long as ours. (See, below, the note under ESTIENNE.) The volume is very

rare.

This rare volume is the first concordance of the whole Bible in which our present division into verses is used for reference. In the New Testament and Apocrypha, this division was made by Robert Estienne, or Stephens, as he is commonly called in English. The first edition of the Greek Testament divided into our present verses was published by him at Geneva in 1551; his edition of the Latin Vulgate in 1555, of which there are copies both in HC. and DS. was the first edition of the whole B.ble so divided.
