translations. Livret des emblêmes, de maître And. Alciat, mis en ryme fr. par Jehan le Fèvre. Par., Wechel, 1536. 8°. in Gothic letter, and woodcuts; a copy on vellum, Vallière, 51 fr. and M'Carthy 127 fr. 374 ALCIBIADE, l', fanciullo a scola. D. P. A. Oranges, par Juann Wart, 1652. small 8°. square.

A very rare original edition of a very lascivious book of 104 pages, and one unnumbered leaf at the end. A reprint with the same date, oblong 12°. has 128 pages, and two unnumbered leaves, and the word l'Alcibiade in the title is divided into two lines (in the original edition it is in one line only). The author is not Pt. Aretin. ALCIMUS Avitus., see AVITUS. 375 ALCINOI ad Platonis dogmata introductio, gr. Par., Vascosanus, 1532. 8°.

This and the edition of Ven., N. de Sabio, 1535. 8°. with a preface by Arsenius, although scarce, are not dear. To the former belongs the Latin translation of Mars. Ficinus, Par., Vascos. 1533. 8°. The first but faulty edition of the Greek text is, together with Apuleius, by Aldus 1521: Gr. et Lat. Dion. Lambino interpr. c. ej. scholiis, Lutet. 1567. 4°. A new recension by Dn. Heinsius in his Maximus Tyr. Lugd. Bat. 1607, 1614, 1630. 8°. A separate impression of this recension, Gr. et Lat. acc. Platonicor. aliquot syllabus alph. (ed. J. Langbain et J. Fell) Ox. 1667. 8°. Gr. Ven. 1748. 8°. (in the Upsal catalogue.) 376 - Alcinoi disciplinarum Platonis epitoma. id est. breviarium incipit. (Latine, interpr. Pt. Balbo, ep. Quadrupedum omnium bisulcorum historia 1621. I vol. De quadruped. digitatis viviparis et oviparis 1637. I vol. Serpentum et draconum historia 1640. 1 vol. Monstror. historia cum paralipomenis hist. omnium animalium 1642. I vol. Museum metallicum 1648. I vol. Dendrologiæ naturalis libri duo 1668. I vol. A good copy of this rare but now little esteemed collection must consist of the different editions mentioned. Copies, whereof

the first 9 vols. are of the reprint of Bonon, 1638-43, are in still less estimation. The most scarce volumes are Mus. metall. and Dendrol. The Paralipomena, which are commonly bound up with the hist. monstror. are also sometimes wanting. Copies made up of the Bologne and Frankfort editions are without value.

Of the Frankfort reprint, which, owing to its less pleasing appearance, has been altogether neglected by bibliographers, the Dresden library possesses the following editions: (such as are known of another date I have noted in parentheses :) Ornithologia. 1610. 1629. 1630. 3 Tomi. (1640.) De insectis. 1618 also 1623. De anim. exang. 1618 also 1623. De pisc. et cetis. 1629 also 1647. (1623 also 1640). De quadrup. solidip. 1623 (not 1622). De quadrup. bisulc. 1647. Dendrol. Ed. 3. 1692 (also 1648 and 1671.) The whole in 4 vols. The Frankfort reprint consequently does not contain de quadrup. digit., serp. et drac. hist., monstr. hist., and mus. metall. The insertion of the names of Clement and George as the printers of the two last is

wrong.
