In Rome still highly prized; less so in France. The edition, Col. 1659. fol. 2 vols. is inferior. The pope afterwards bought the plates, and had a new text written for them. See below SCULTUre.

1006 ARIOSTO, L. Orlando furioso. Ferrara, per Maestro Giouani Mazoco dal Bondeno, a di XXII de Aprile, 1516. 4°. 262 numbered leaves, and I unnumbered at the end.

Very scarce. 40 cantos. Equally so, Ven., Zoppino, 1524. 4°. 208 leaves. Firenze, nel M.D.XXVIII. a di XXV del mese di Luio (sic). 4°.

1009

Little known. It appears to be a reprint of the edition of 1521. 40 cantos.

Ferrara, Fr. Rosso, 1532.

Prized, because it is the last from the author's own hand, and preferred by Apostolo Zeno to all the rest. 46 cantos. Ariosto's likeness at the end of the book is said to be designed by Titian. A copy on vellum in the public library at Vicenza. Torino, Mt. Cravotto,

A good and scarce edition. At the end are the corrections of the author, made according to the preceding edition. 1012 — Roma, Blado, 1543. 4°. Fine, scarce, and correct.

This contains for the first time the addition to the Furioso in 5 cantos. Although incorrect, it is fine, and remarkable as the last of the editions which contain the text in its original form. One of the rarest of the Aldine productions.-Ven., Giolito, 1545. 8°. with woodcuts. Not noticed by Fernow. - con le cinque canti aggi

Very scarce, and the first edition, as Dibdin has proved from the Privilegium of Leo X. of the 27th of March, 1516, which is to be found in it, Decam. I. 286- 1015

Sought after. According to the leaf of errata and the printer's symbol, Gi. Bt. Rota tavola, of 16 leaves ought also to be found in it. Ruscelli often allowed himself capricious alterations in the language and orthography.-Valgrisi reprinted this edition, 1558, 60, 62, 73, &c. in 4°.

Tolerably fine. 20 leaves of preliminary matter, 654 pages of text, 16 leaves, Rota tavola, 44 leaves (with a separate title), Alb. Lavezuola osservazioni. Greatly prized on account of its explanations and plates. Instead of the plate to the 34th canto (Astolfo coming with his flying steed out of the cavern of the harpies), the plate of the 33rd canto is repeated in most copies, probably because the former was supplied afterwards, and pasted over the false one. Copies with the right plate (although an ordinary one) are most rare. In some copies this plate is drawn with a pen. In others an engraved copy after a pen-drawing is to be found, the spuriousness of which is im

mediately detected by comparing it with my dete In another still this plate is borrowed from an English translation, the plates of which were copied from those by Porro. The English text on the reverse of this plate easily detects this cheat. -Copies with the plate of the 33rd canto, twice over, are not scarce. Fine and correct, with 46 plates and I portrait by Bartolozzi and others. A pretty anecdote about the signification of the words Rasino, Poltrone, Animale, in the plate to the 43rd canto in the Cat. de Crevenna, IV. 36. Also 100 copies on large 4°. which are very scarce. But the reprints of the plates (at least in the 1st and 2nd vols.) are less fine than in the 8°. edition,
