IXION.

IXION, king of Thessaly, having quarrelled with, and treacherously put to death, a neighbouring prince, was so persecuted by all mankind that Jupiter had compassion on him, and took him up to heaven. His conduct there was marked with insolence to Juno, and ingratitude to his benefactor; and Jupiter at length, after stuking him with a thunderbolt, ordered Mercury to conduct him to the infernal regions and there bind him to a wheel, which perpetually turning round, his punishment was doomed to be eternal.

This is usually instanced as the best work of a young sculptor remarkable for his superior abilities, and his premature and melancholy end. Dying neglected and unknown, specimens of his talents are now rarely met with. His Ixion is distinguished by an originality, grandeur, and vigour of imagination, that excites the highest admiration of his powers. It is in the possession of Sir Abraham Hume Bar1. at Wormley Bury, Herts, by whose favour it is now for the first time engraved.

IXION, Roi de Thessalie, ayant eu une querelle avec un Prince voisin, le tua par trahison. Persécuté et repoussé de tout côté, Jupiter en eut compassion et l'enleva au Ciel.

Bientôt Ixion payant d'ingratitude les bienfaits du Dieu, traita Junon avec insolence. Jupiter irrité le frappa de la foudre, ordonna à Mercure de le conduire aux enfers et de l'attacher à une roue qui tourna toujours, punition qu'il dût souffrir éternellement.

Ce morceau est généralement regardé comme le meilleur ouvrage d'un jeune sculpteur, connu par son talent supérieur et sa fin triste et prématurée. Mort inconnu, on rencontre rarement des traces de son génie. Son Ixion se distingue par une originalité, une grandeur, une force de conception qui ont excité la plus haute admiration pour son talent. Cette statue est maintenant en la possession de sir Abraham Hume, baronet, à Wormley-Bury, qui a bien voulu permettre qu'il fùt gravé pour la première fois dans cette collection.
