LANDING OF CHARLES II. AFTER nine years of exile, spent in wandering through various states of Europe, Charles II. was called upon by the invi. tation of Parliament and the wishes of the Nation at large to return and resume the sceptre of his ancestors. Accordingly quitting Breda, his temporary residence, he repaired to the Hague, and from thence to Scheveling, where an English fleet, under Admiral Montague, awaited his arrival and wafted him to Dover. He was received on his landing by a numerous deputation of the nobility and gentry, and by General Monk, whose influence had powerfully contributed to his restoration, and was welcomed by the acclamation of a numerous coucourse of all ranks of people. This event, so important in the history of the Stuarts, occured Friday May 25th., 1660. In selecting this incident for pictorial illustration, West displayed his usual judgement, and has treated it in a simple and dignified manner. Charles, accompanied by his brothers the Dukes of York and Gloucester, and attended by Clarendon and Sir John Granville, occupies the centre of the composition; he is in the act of raising Monk who knells before him. The grouping, expression, and ligh and shade, all contribute to the developement of the story. It forms part of the magnificent collection of Earl Grosvenor, and has been finely engraved by Woollett and Sharp. Size, 5 feet by 7 feet. WEST. DÉBARQUEMENT DE CHARLES II.
