week to booksellers and readers, a fresh volume in their "No Name Series," entitled "A Modern Mephistopheles." Of course the authorship is a secret, but certain peculiarities indicate a writer with more or less of Hawthorne's genius, and the story's name strengthens the conjecture. This series is very generally popular, already having reached a circulation of twenty-five to thirty thousand copies, which is excellent for these quiet times.

"FRUIT AND BREAD: a Scientific Diet" is the title of the book which Dr. M. L. Holbrook, editor of the Herald of Health and author of several useful books on health, has translated from the German of Gustave Schleckeysen. About 1000 copies have been ordered in advance of publication. The question of man's natural diet is described from the stand-point of evolution, and the book is destined to stir up a good deal of thought. The book will contain about 250 pages, be cloth bound, and sell for $1. It will be published by Wood & Holbrook early in May.

D. LOTHROP & Co. have now ready a new edition of" Light on the Dark River," a memorial volume of Mrs. H. A. L. Hamlin, formerly missionery at Constantinople, by Mrs. Margaret W. Lawrence; and "The American Evangelists," containing full accounts of the lives of Mr. Moody and Mr. Sankey, and of the various revival movements, both in England and this country, of which they have been leaders. It also gives a biographical sketch of Mr. P. P. Bliss, whose music has been so effective an agent in revival work, and of Dr. Eben Tourjée of Boston, who has had charge of the choruses which have rendered so efficient service during the Boston meeting. The embellishments include portraits of these four gentlemen, scenes memorable in Mr. Moody's personal experi

hippodromes, and tabernacles-in which his famous meetings have been held. The book is by Rev. Elias Nason, and is likely to find an army of readers.

ADVANCE orders from the trade for "Wel-ence, and many of the structures-depots, rinks, come Tidings," the new Sabbath-school musicbook by Lowry, Doane, and Sankey, containing the new music of the late P. P. Bliss, are being received by J. Church & Co., the publishers, and we are informed, seem to indicate that the book will sell as largely as any of the former Sunday-school books.

JAMES R. OSGOOD & Co., publish this week Mr. Howells's exceedingly clever story (which he calls a comedy), "Out of the Question," and three new volumes of Mr. Longfellow's excellent "Poems of Places," devoted to Italy. This instalment is exceptionally rich in illus. trious names nd notable poems.

A NEW edition of that well-known book, Cushing's "Manual of Parliamentary Practice," is announced for immediate publication by Thompson, Brown & Co., Boston. It has enjoyed the revision of the brother of the author, and will be issued in new and attractive style

THE next publication of Geo. W. Carleton & Co. will be, in the "New York Weekly Series," Dr. Robinson's "Nick Whiffles," which has been so popular that that journal has printed it three times, to the satisfaction of its readers.

"GARTH," Mr. Julian Hawthorne's new novel, published serially in Harper's Magazine, will be issued shortly in volume form by D. Appleton & Co.

ROBERTS BROTHERS will publish on the 25th, with "Barry Cornwall's Autobiography," mentioned last week, and commended anew this

"THE United States Dispensatory," revised by G. B. Wood, M.D., assisted by H. C. Wood, M.D., will soon be published, in its 14th edition, by J. B. Lippincott & Co., thoroughly revised and enlarged. How anxiously this has been looked for by the medical fraternity at large can readily be imagined, since the last edition was published in 1870, just seven years ago. And within that time pharmacological science has grown to an enormous extent-so much so, indeed, that the old edition but half filled its mission. The fact that no care or labor has been spared to render the present edition equal in accuracy and in completeness to its predecessors, and that great pains have been taken to omit superfluous matter and to condense the text, will certainly make glad the hearts of all published in royal octavo, sheep, at $10. those who are compelled to use it. It will be
