THOUGH essentially holiday books, Mrs. Oliphant's "Makers of Florence" and Rimmer's "Ancient Streets and Homesteads of England" were received too late on this side to benefit much by the Christmas season, as but a limited supply of the former and none of the latter arrived till the holidays proper were over. The beauty of their illustrations, however, and the interest in the subjects treated should insure a permanent demand for the books, though it may be for a time retarded by the detention in their receipt. They are certainly among the most beautiful and valuable of Macmillan's illustrated standard works. ON the 22d inst. one of the largest private libraries in the country will be offered at auction by Geo. A. Leavitt & Co., at their rooms in Clinton Hall. Mr. Peter Hastie, one of the Croton Aqueduct Engineers, began the collection, which was completed by Mr. Edward H. Tracy, who added largely to the scientific department. It comprises about 20,000 volumes, and is peculiarly rich in the departments of science, poetry and the drama, bibliography, black-letter and early printed books, biography, illustrated works, theology, etc. Catalogues of the collection (numbering nearly 600 pages) are now for sale at one dollar. IT was somewhat significant that among the earliest publications of the new year were David Dudley Field's pamphlet on the counting of the electoral vote, and the larger work giving the full official proceedings at previous Presidential counts. Both are issued by the Appletons, at 25 cents and $3 respectively. D. LOTHROP & Co., of Boston, will publish, January 15th, "Song Victories of the Bliss and Sankey Hymns," giving an account of the re markable effect produced by some of the notable revival melodies sung at Mr. Moody's meetings. It will form a thin volume, and will sell at 30 cents in boards. The same house announces a miniature library of ten volumes, called the Old Humphrey Stories, for $2.50. GINN & HEATH have now ready "The New Method in Latin," in Allen & Greenough's series of Latin text-books. Two editions were absorbed in advance of publication by teachers who knew it was coming, and also knew how admirable it was. Like the other volumes of this series, it is scientific in arrangement, clear in statement and definition, and gives both teacher and pupil assurance of being on the right track. This house has nearly ready a new edition of" Harvard Examination Papers," including the papers used in last season's examinations at Cambridge. HUDSON'S pamphlet sections of "Text-books in Prose and Poetry," comprising selections from Burke, Webster, and Bacon, for prose, and from Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Burns, for poetry, have gained quite a large circulation for use in schools, for which they are excellently adapted. LOCKWOOD, BROOKS & Co. add to their new publications "The Frau Domina," a German story, by Claire von Glümer. It is much better translated than most stories from a foreign language, and, without making any pretensions to be great, it is well worth the attention of all who enjoy German stories. A FIFTY-CENT edition of "Daniel Deronda" is in preparation at the Harpers'. BUSINESS NOTES. BOSTON, MASS.-A fire in the store of Wm. F.
