THE

Publishers' Trade-List Annual

For 1877.

THE TRADE-LIST ANNUAL for 1877 is expected to be ready in August. The special features this year will be the resumption of the Annual Reference List, which, embracing the books published from July 1, 1876, to June 30, 1877, will serve as the first Supplement to the American Catalogue, now well advanced toward publication, and an entirely new Educational Catalogue, compiled from the new revised publishers' lists.

The price will be One Dollar per copy, bound in cloth. The price of the volume will be raised after close of subscription.

No single subscriptions can be taken into account that have not been paid up on day of publication, as the small amounts will neither bear the trouble nor the expense or risk of numerous accounts, bills, statements, and subsequent collections.

Remittances should be made by money-order on New York, or registered letter, as we cannot be responsible for any losses. Receipt for remittance will be sent by return mail.

Unless special shipping directions are received, copies ready for delivery will be dispatched by express.

Booksellers, in their own interest, are requested to call the attention of librarians and large book-buyers to the ANNUAL.

THE

AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL CATALOGUE,

For 1877 [Eighth Year].

NEARLY all School-book houses having issued their price-lists on the new basis, it is desirable that an entirely new Educational Catalogue be given to the Trade at the earliest date possible.

The Educational Catalogue has been found so valuable to the Trade, not only as a finding list, but for circulation among educational customers, for the purpose of soliciting orders, and saving at the same time much troublesome correspondence, that its continuance is recognized as a necessity. In order to secure this, it will be necessary that booksellers who have the facilities for placing one hundred or more copies should immediately forward their orders. The imprint editions are expected to go to press early in July.

In making up special orders for the Educational Catalogue, Booksellers should bear in mind that it possesses not only temporary value, but will serve its purpose during the whole year. As numerous orders for editions are received every summer, after the issue of the Educational Catalogue, we again call attention to the necessity of being in possession of all orders on or before June 25th.

CASH TERMS FOR EDITIONS:

With sole imprint of ordering firm, and stitched, 100 copies, $5; 1000 copies, $40.

The last page will be left blank, unless a stereotyped or electrotyped page, uniform in size with The Publishers' WEEKLY, shall be sent before going to press. If we are to make the plate, it will be charged extra at the mere cost of composition and electrotyping-viz., $5.75. Mode of shipping must be stated with order.

D. LOTHROP & Co., by the publication of an edition of the Confessions of Augustine," which has long been recognized as ranking among the world's great religious classics, complete the list of books named by Rev. Joseph Cook, in one of his recent Boston lectures, as emphatic aids to devotion and meditation. The other books named were the "Imitation of Christ." Prof. Phelps's exquisite book, "The Still Hour," Bunyan's "Holy War," and Tholuck's "Hours of Christian Devotion."

EXCEPT for lighter books, the publishing season is pretty nearly closed. Two novels will about close the Putnam list-both by American authors. NOTES IN SEASON.

"LAW FOR THE CLERGY" is just ready at S. C. Griggs & Co's., Chicago, in a neat 16mo volume, which contains a collocation of the common law of marriage, useful in all the States, and a compilation of statute law in regard to marriage and other offices of the clergy in the prominent Western States. It is useful not only to the clergy, but to all who are concerned with offices of public worship and with religious legislation. LOTHROP'S list of books coming very shortly

includes, besides the two new volumes of the "Sea-Side Series" recently mentioned-" Goodfor-Nothing Polly," a story for boys, by Ella Farman, and therefore sure to be good, and "Nan, the New-Fashioned Girl," by Mrs. S. C. Hallowell, whose name must be familiar and welcome to a host of young readers-" Our Pet," the story of a peculiarly noble and almost human dog, by Mrs. Maria Bruce Lyman; " Hidden Treasure," by the well-known author of "Andy Luttrell ;" and "John Bremm," a temperance story which is expected to make a sensation, by Mr. A. A. Hopkins of Rochester. THE second volume in Rev. Samuel Johnson's great work on "Oriental Religions and their Relation to Universal Religion" is almost ready for publication by J. R. Osgood & Co. It is devoted to China, its religion, philosophy, education, science, government, and civilization. Mr. Johnson has devoted to this work the study and thought of many years, and-as is known to those who have read his volume on "India"-his labors have produced a work of great historic and philosophical value. This second volume, wholly complete in itself, is an octavo of nearly 1000 pages, and the price is $5.

"A DAY OF MY LIFE," by a present Eton boy, has been one of the sensations of the English season, and Mr. Geo. R. Lockwood has been clever enough to reprint it. Somebody,is it Emerson?-says that any one's day is sufficient to make a story, provided the story is properly told, and this Eton boy has succeeded

Her Sacrifice," a story of English life, is by "X," who is said to be a young lady known in New York society.

A NUMBER of new books are just or nearly ready at Macmillan & Co.'s, including Matthew Arnold's Poems, in two neat volumes, which should be very welcome to those who know how thoroughly a poet is the writer known to most of us chiefly as a theologian,-or the conThe new Globe "Milton" should call trary. fresh attention to their "Globe Series," the best books edited by the first scholars, offered yet at the lowest price.

"THE PHYSICAL BASIS OF MIND" is the title of the third volume of G. H. Lewes's elaborate work, "Problems of Life and Mind." It will be published next week by J. R. Osgood & Co.. and will attract the attention of all interested in the large themes of which it treats. It is not so abstruse as to be dull, is scientific enough to answer the demands of this scientific age, and is written with admirable literary skill.

WM. RUTTER & Co. have nearly ready a new revised edition of the " Duyckinck's Cyclopedia of American Literature," a standard book embracing notices of not less than eight hundred American writers. M. Laird Simons has brought the work up to date. The new edition is in two large octavo volumes of over 1000 pages each, with full index.

THE sterling series of good novels published by the Petersons are reported to be having a good sale. Volume 9 of the series-" The Dead Secret," a novel, by Wilkie Collins-will will soon be ready,-in octavo, at $1.

THE next handful of Osgood's pretty, legible and timely "Vest-Pocket" books will include "Favorite Poems," by Hood and by Tennyson, "Tales of the White Hills," by Hawthorne, and Carlyle's admirable essay, "On the Choice of Books."

FLORENCE MARRYAT'S new novel, A Harvest of Wild Oats," will be ready, from author's advance sheets, at G. W. Carleton & Co.'s next week.
