INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER.

THERE are several important particulars in the very concise history of Rahab, which seem to require some further development than is presented by a bare recital of the transaction, upon which only an estimate of her character can be formed, as given in the sacred narrative. This is unavoidably brief, from the vast mass of records which the inspired writer had to exhibit, in order to embrace all the main events necessary so to complete his history that the series should be regular and distinct, though the details could not be otherwise than short and crowded. Thus it happens that facts are often nakedly stated, even when their importance is great, without comment; the moral
