The Cabot Legends. PP. with one illustration, 1897. 24 3 parts large 8vo.sd. Trans. of the Roy. Soc. of Canada, Ottawa, 1896-97 By virtue of its clear and ample demonstration, and of the great quantity of illustration (chiefly facsimiles from rare old maps) this is the weightiest work on the subject of the Cabot voyages which has ever appeared. "In this erudite pamphlet Dr. Dawson recapitulates and reiterates his reasons for holding that the landfall' of John Cabot in his voyage of 1497 was on the east coast of Cape Breton. By some authorities, as is well known, it is contended that the place of Cabot's disembarkation was in Newfoundland, while others will have it to have been on the shores of Labrador, and one of the latest utterances on the subject gives expression to the sceptical conclusion that the exact, and even the approximate, locality can never be determined. The theory here expressed is mainly founded on the fact that 'the landfull of the voyage of John Cabot in 1497 was first definitely located in the year 1544' in Cape Breton, or, in other words, that the indication of the Cape Breton landfull rests upon the evidence of Sebastian Cabot, reduced to graphic form in his lifetime.' This fact, long forgotten, was re-discovered in 1843 after other theories had replaced it, and Dr. Dawson does not pretend to have done anything beyond vindicating the first-the original-and the almost contemporary statement." His theory is certainly supported with great learning and ingenuity, and the reader who desires to test his arguments and to master the general question will find plenty of helpful and valuable material in the numerous maps and charts, ancient and modern, with which his pages are illustrated."—The Glasgow Herald, April 22, '98. 191 THE CABOT ROLL . .
