It was the first book devoted to Abyssinia, and by virtue of its
intrinsic importance, it still ranks foremost in the literature of the subject.

tion extends to leaf 130 which is marked 136 in consequence of a blunder by which the
numeration was skipped between 14 and 23. Thus the first two leaves are not
numbered, leaves 3-16 were numbered 1-14, leaves 17-130 are numbered 23-136, and
leaves 131-136 are not numbered.

Alvarez accompanied a Portuguese embassy sent from India to Abyssinia in 1520-27.

No translator's name is given. It may have been Bellero himself, who signs the
dedication. He published the book, but was not the actual printer, as we see that the
licence was given to Plantin. There is some matter in this translation which is not in
the original. For instance the text is preceded by a Discours sur la Premiere et
Seconde Lettre de Andre Corsal, Lettre de la Royne Helene, Voyage d'Andre Corsal,
Preface de Ramusio, and at the end we find annexed Lettres du serenissime David Roy
d'Ethiopie. There are also six woodcut plans of Temples.

After the completion of this book and the circulation of some portion of the edition, it was thought expedient by some one to add to it a reprint of the author's diplomatic mission to Cairo in 1505, and accordingly this piece in 16 leaves was appended to such of the copies as still remained in the publisher's hands. It does not however properly belong to the book, which is complete in its genuine form as above.

Decade I had appeared in 1511; Decades II and III were not written by the author till 1514-16, and they appeared here for the first time.

Twenty-two leaves with signatures a-d in fours, e six leaves.
First Edition of the fourth Decade of Peter Martyr, although there is nothing in
the book to specify that fact. The back of the title is occupied by an address from the
printer, Adam Petri, to Joannes Catenæus Salediensis of Benacum, physician of the
princess, praying him to present it to her. As the text begins on the second leaf with
"Ex mearum decadū libellis in uulgus emissis colligere licet, Pater sancte. ." Adam
Petri ought to have seen that this was dedicated to the Pope, and was only the con-
tinuation of a book; but it does not seem to have struck him. How the transcript
came into his hands we are unable to form an idea; but here is the fourth Decade in
its first published state, nine years earlier than the author's own edition.

This excessively rare volume is a kind of Collection of Voyages, which is not only the first in the French language, but is also antecedent to all other collections of the kind, with the one exception of the famous Paesi (see FRACANZO). It consists of Peter Martyr's first three Decades reduced to French; followed by three Narrations, the first being a version of the De Insulis noviter repertis of Basle, 1521, which was the pirated first edition of Peter Martyr's fourth Decade; and the second and third are derived from the two letters of Cortes printed at Nürnberg in 1524.

The three Decades are dedicated to Charles Duc of Angouleme, and the three Narrations to his sister Marguerite de France. They were the children of Francis I, and at that time only ten and nine years old, respectively.

Two hundred and fifteen leaves, with signatures a-z and A-D in eighths (of which the last leaf was blank). The leaves are numbered 1-207 preceded by 8 unnumbered leaves.
