VOYAGE DANS LA HAUTE EGYPTE, 2 vols. roy. folio, with 83 beautiful photographic views of the ancient monuments found between Cairo and the First Cataract, hf. bd. Le Caire, 1893 The scarce First Edition, the Text in MS. This work gives a splendid general view of the Scenery and Antiquities of Upper Egypt, and will be most interesting to those who, having visited Egypt, wish for a scientific descriptive account of its chief attractions. It combines on a reduced scale the full views of David Roberts' Egypt with the scholarship of Champollion and Rosellini's works. 435 MOHAMMED ALI, 1769-1849. The Hon. Sir Charles Augustus Murray's Memoir of MOHAMMED ALI, founder of the Vice-Royalty of Egypt, edited by the Rt. Hon. Sir HERBERT MAXWELL, Bart., M.P., 8vo. portrait of the Author, cloth 1898 Only a small edition has been printed. Mohammed Ali was free from Oriental prejudices and superstitions, his life is a complete romance. His destruction of the Mameluks was a political necessity. 66 The man who massacred the Mamelukes (or Memlooks as here spelt), who might have overthrown the Sultan but for Western intervention, who practically separated Egypt from the Ottoman Empire must always form an attractive theme. And never more so than in this brilliantly written and tactful memoir, by one who really understood the Oriental and who had rare opportunities to study the life and work of that wonderful Turk."-Pall Mall Gazette, Dec. 30th, 1898. 66 Among the papers placed at the disposal of Sir Herbert Maxwell, when he was writing his biography of the late Hon. Sir Charles Murray, was a memoir of Mohammed Ali, written by Sir Charles, and apparently intended for publication. Some of the extracts of this attracted the attention of persons in Egypt interested in the development of the country, and at their request, and with Lady Murray's consent, this memoir has been published. A Short Memoir of Mohammed Ali' (Bernard Quaritch, London) is a very interesting essay which throws much light on the character of the founder of the Viceroyalty of Egypt, and indeed, on the Egyptian question generally; and Sir Herbert Maxwell has done a good thing in publishing it. The late Sir Charles Murray had ample opportunities, in his capacity of Consul-General in Egypt, of studying the character of Mohammed Ali, and this little essay shows that he did not neglect to make use of them. The memoir, written in a lucid, if not brilliant, style, is a noteworthy contribution to the history of the nineteenth century."-Transport, Dec. 9th, 1898. “Mr. Bernard Quaritch has published in a neat little volume (58) a bright and able monograph by the late Hon. Sir Charles Augustus Murray, entitled A Short Memoir of Mohammed Ali.' Sir Herbert Maxwell, whose life of the author, published earlier in the year by Messrs. Blackwood, attracted very favourable notice, has edited this essay to which he had referred in that book. As Consul-General in Egypt from 1846 to 1853 Sir Charles Murray witnessed the close of the remarkable life which he depicted in this most interesting sketch, in which he evinces the large and profound knowledge he had of Oriental history and character, sums up the changes wrought by the strong personality of the great Viceroy, and reviews the progress made in the government and condition of Egypt under his rule. At the present moment the publication of this memoir is opportune, for it throws a great deal of light on the past and present history of Egypt."-The Homeward Mail, Nov. 28th, 1898. 435* NAPOLEON'S EGYPT: DESCRIPTION DE L'EGYPTE, ou Recueil des Observations et des Recherches qui ont été faites en Egypte pendant l'Expédition de l'Armée Française (Ouvrage publié sous la Direction de M. Translated by Edward HeronAllen 1899 Mr. Heron-Allen has just brought out a new and revised edition of the "Rubâiyät of Omar Khayyâm" in Edward FitzGerald's incomparable version. Side by side with FitzGerald's text is a facsimile of the oldest known rendering of the quatrains from a unique manuscript in the Bodleian Library. Lowell declared that we were all shut up to one of two alternatives-either Omar was a FitzGerald born out of due season, or the latter was a reincarnation of the Persian poet of the twelfth century. Mr. HeronAllen's book has been greatly improved since its first appearance: scholarly notes and literal translations form his own chief contribution. They are of undoubted value as aids to the interpretation of a poem which would never have conquered the homage of the West if FitzGerald had not lavished upon it his genius. The task grew in his wonderful hands, under alien skies, into a thing of beauty and a joy for ever. Edward Fitzgerald's "Ruba'iyat" of Omar Khayyam, with their original Persian sources, collated from his own MSS., and literally translated by Mr. Edward HeronAllen, appear in a very handsome volume, published at 78 6d, by Mr. Bernard Quaritch, 15, Piccadilly, W. The comparisons are extremely interesting. Fitzgerald, it was well known, took pretty free liberties with the original, and Mr. Heron-Allen lets the general reader into the whole secret, showing-sometimes rather amusingly-how much in Fitzgerald's Ruba'iyat we owe to that peculiar genius and how much to Omar. The book has an exquisite allegorical frontispiece. "Mr. Heron-Allen has done good service in setting the question of the real "The most enthusiastic devotee of the Tentmaker' can hardly ask for more. 459 Forestry. BURGESS (H. W.) Privately printed for subscribers only, 1896 1 1 0 It is a matter of some note that many words and phrases constantly met with in French classics-in the works, for instance, of RABELAIS, VOLTAIRE, MOLIÈRE, ROUSSEAU, and BÉRANGER-find no place either in ordinary French-English dictionaries or in Argot-Slang glossaries. Moreover, French lexicons professing to deal with such words (which are chiefly erotic in character) treat the subject so exclusively from a suggestive point of view that they utterly fail to command the attention of the honest student. Vocabula Amatoria fills this gap, the words receiving plain yet orderly definition, whilst thousands of apt and illustrative quotations show usage and application.
