IDEAS, | ACCIDENTAL AND INCIDENTAL | TO Upright folio, COMPLETE, with 42 coloured plates of 0 20 060 2 10 0 1 10 0 Dates on the plates, 1826-30 52 10 0 A COPY OF THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE RAREST OF ALL ÅLKEN'S BOOKS. Before copies had time to circulate, the stock of this first issue was partly destroyed by fire. By utilising some undamaged plates and reprinting others, a small second issue was brought out, copies of which were bound up in oblong folio not, as were those of the first issue, in upright folio. A comparison of copies of the two issues would at once reveal the uniform brilliancy of the one and the mixed excellence of the other. To the collector, in the absence of any such comparison, the "size" test is sufficient evidence as to correctness of "state." The works of Alken, before those of any other author or engraver, are becoming more and more inaccessible by reason of the constantly increasing demand for coloured sporting books and prints. It therefore behoves the conscientious collector to at once secure the above example of Alken's scarcest work. 1018 APPLEBY (J. C.)
