A MAGNIFICENTLY PRINTED AND ILLUSTRATED BOOK, VERY RARE. On its thick white paper, and in its large noble-looking types, it forms a strong contrast to the editions which Rodler printed afterwards. It would seem as though the expenses of this first edition had been defrayed by a subsidy from the Pfalzgraf to whom it is dedicated.

3 vols. in 1, small folio, with 123 fine woodcuts designed by Jost Amman; in limp vellum wrapper; or 3 vols. in 2, calf gilt

Franckfurt, 1566

Some of the designs bear the monogram of HB, which used to be erroneously assigned to Hans Bocksperger. These initials represent no doubt some block-cutter who worked for Jost Amman. Amman's initials appear on a great number of the illustrations; not however upon the large folded one occupying two full pages, which is given twice in the book.

The first volume is a reprint of the text of Ruxner's Turnierbuch.

598 CHARLES V. AMPLISSIMO HOC APPARATU et pulchro ordine POMPA
FUNEBRIS BRUXELLIS à Palatio ad divæ Gudulæ templum processit,
cum rex Hispaniarum Philippus CAROLO V ROM. IMP. parenti
moestissimus justa solveret. Oblong atlas folio, 37 coloured plates of
the procession, as described below, hf. bd.

Hagae-Comit. (1559) Henricus Hondius, 1619 25 0 0

The excessive rarity of these plates arises from their having served to ornament
the walls of houses, public places, etc. In consequence, nearly the whole have been
destroyed.

The plates of the procession joined together would form one large plate thirtythree feet in length. 599 COSTELLO (D.). A Tour through the Valley of the Meuse, and Legends of the Walloon Country. Post 8vo., with coloured frontispieces and title-page and numerous woodcuts, cloth, or hf. bd. (1845)
