655 MAGNI (Olai) Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus . . . Sm. folio,
First Edition, with map and numerous large and small woodcuts repre-
senting curious incidents, strange customs, the manners and customs of the
North; green morocco, gilt edges
Romæ, 1555
the same.
Sm. folio, a fine copy in the original oak boards, covered
in leather, with portraits and various curious devices stamped on the
sides
1555
The works of the two brothers Magnus, both Bishops of Upsala in immediate
succession, should be carefully distinguished. That of Joannes Magnus is an historical
chronicle down to 1520 ; that of Olaus Magnus is a complete illustrated Encyclopædia
of Northern Superstitions, Occupations, Sports, Warfare, etc. following no chronological
sequence, but simply arranged under various headings.

Vol. IV of this important historical work is very scarce, and seldom found with
the other three. It contains the general preface, a Monasticon, supplementary matter
with Indexes. It is stated by Mr. Warter (Southey's son-in-law) that the stock of the
third volume perished in a great fire at Copenhagen in 1794, and that copies of it were
in consequence very rare; but his remark probably applied to the fourth, and not the
third, volume.

Strengnesi, typis auctoris, 1636 Printing was established in Strenguaes by Bishop Paulin in 1632, at a private press, for which was invented a peculiar type. This renders the books issued from this press very curious and of importance for the History of Topography.

A MS. note states that this Northern History is excessively rare. It contains copious details relating to the history of Sweden, more especially in modern times, and an account of the East and West Goths in Italy and Spain. The former owner observes that Queen Christina in 1637 commanded the author to cancel p. 381, containing an account of the Riga affair in the reign of Gustavus Adolphus (1626). The above copy, however, has this leaf.
