With the bookplate of the Right Hon. Charles Viscount Bruce of Ampthill. 3017 THE BOOK OF BALLYMOTE; a collection of pieces in the Irish Language, dating from the end of the fourteenth century; now published in Photolithography from the original Manuscript in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy. With Introduction, Analysis of Contents, etc. by Robert Atkinson. Folio, hf. morocco

Only 200 copies were printed.

(1881)

The Book of Ballymote contains numerous articles of interest to the Scholar and to the Antiquary. The original portion consists of-Genealogical Lists; Histories and Legends; a fragment of the Brehon Laws; a copy of the Dindsenchas; Treatises on Metric and on Grammatical Topics, etc. The other portion contains translations, more or less condensed, from Latin originals: the Destruction of Troy, the Wandering of Ulysses, the Story of the Eneid, and the Life of Alexander the Great. 3018 THE BOOK OF DEER, edited for the Spalding Club by John Stuart.

4to. with 22 plates of facsimiles of the MS.; cloth Edinburgh, 1869

The Book of Deer is a vellum MS. of the ninth century written in Irish characters and containing a defective copy of the Gospels in the ante-Hieronymian Latin text. Mr. Stuart believes it to have been produced in a Pictish monastery, but it will be safer to ascribe it to some Gaelic house founded by the monks of Iona.-Some of the facsimiles give portions of the text; others reproduce the decorative features. 3019 THE BOOK OF KELLS. CELTIC ORNAMENTS from the Book of Kells. Royal 4to. 50 plates reproduced from photographs, with a preface by T. K. Abbott; cloth gilt

Dublin, 1895

The very numerous illustrations in the Book of Kells render the volume, in Prof. Westwood's words, "a complete storehouse of artistic interest." 3020 THE BOOK OF LEINSTER, sometime called The Book of Glendalough, a collection of pieces in the Irish Language, compiled in part about the middle of the twelfth century, from the original MS. in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin. Folio, on toned paper, with a photograph of a page of the original; with Introduction, etc., by Professor ATKINSON; hf. bd.

circa 1690

3051

This is evidently the author's rough draft, from the fact that it is unsigned, and has several corrections and modifications. But it was evidently thought to be worthy of the Ormonde Archives. It is probable that Sir Richard (afterwards Lord Chancellor) Cox sent the draft to Sir Robert Southwell, and that the latter forwarded it to the second Duke as it was. It is in the form of a long historical letter.
