Missal

Paris. 1518 125 0 0

This volume is a magnificent example of typographical art and skill. It is likewise so rare that only two other copies are recorded, one at Cambridge, the other in the Bodleian library, both of them imperfect.

The text is that of the entire Lessons and Homilies of the Breviary, for the Temporale, and the Common and Proper Sanctorale of the whole year.

COLLATION: a-z, 7, and 2, in eights; t in six, and t in four leaves; A, B, in eights, and C in ten leaves; A, B, in eights, and C in ten leaves; -I in eights; AA-CC in eights. Of the aggregate 430 leaves, the following are supplied in facsimile: the title and ccl-3, 6-8; besides this, leaves a2 and z8 are partly defective. They are inserted loosely in their actual condition, and a full facsimile of each fastened in its place.

Small 4to. printed in black and red, in double columns, with the Music; two full-page illustrations before the Canon, and several woodcuts of smaller size throughout the book; slightly cut in some of the headlines, but a good, sound, and perfect copy in purple morocco, gilt edges, with the book-label of John Thomas Simes

Paris, F. Regnault, 1533 150 0 0 Only five copies are recorded by Weale; all of them locked up in public institutions. . In the preface to the Surtees Society's edition, six copies are mentioned: the three in the Bodleian, the one at

Cambridge, and two in private hands. Of these two, the copy now in
the B. M. was probably one, and the copy in my possession is the other.

COLLATION: A, 8 leaves; a-m in eights; n 4 leaves; o-z in eights;
8 leaves, and 2 10 leaves; amounting altogether to 206 leaves.

On

This is a document of no small importance in the history of the Church. It may be said to represent the Roman-Anglian order, as opposed to the Roman-Saxon of the South of England, which is called the use of Sarum. The rarity of York books is to be explained by the double hostility with which they were regarded, from the jealousy of the Southern Church, and the anti-Roman zeal of the Reformers. 155 SARUM MISSAL. Fol, 1a, title: Missale | Secundu vsum insignis ecclesie Say (Under this intitulation, a fine large woodcut of St. George and the Dragon.) Foll. 2-7 contain the Calendar, and fol. 8 the Benedictio salis et aque. fol. 9 (numbered fo. i and signatured Ai) the text begins under a large woodcut. The Ordinary of the Mass begins on fol. 87a (marked Fol. lxxix.), and the prefaces end on fol. 94 (marked lxxxvi). Foll. 95-100 (foliated lxxxviixcii) contain the Canon. Foll. 95-98 are ON VELLUM; 956 has a woodcut of the crucifixion, and 96a one of God in Majesty. Foll. 101-141 (foliated xciii-cxxxiii) contain the supplement of the Temporale. On fol. 142a (marked xxxiiij), beneath alargewoodcut, begins the Proprium Sanctorum, which ends on fol. 190 (marked clxxxii). Foll. 191-242 (marked faultily clxxxiii-ccxliiii) contain the Commune Sanctorum. Fol. 242a, column 2 :.. Anno incarnationis dominice | quingentesimo octauo supra mille- | simum. die vero xxvii mensis maii | arte et industria Magistri Martini | morin | impressoris Rothomagi iux | ta insigne prioratu sancti Laudi co- morañ, Impensa vero Iohannis richardi mercatoris hoc egregium opus sacri inissalis ad vsum famose ac percelebris ecclesie Say, nuper solerter correctum et emendatum : | est palam venale facili pcio coram cunctis productum et exhibitum. Foll. 2426-244a contain the Tabula. Foll. 245-256 contain the Accentuarium. On the reverse of 256 the printer's mark.

Small folio, Gothic letter, printed in black and red, in double columns, with woodcuts, 256 leaves (of which four are ON VELLUM); having a few small wormholes, but nevertheless A FINE, VERY LARGE, AND PERFECT COPY in the original stamped binding

The quire-signatures are a, and A-I in eights, K and L in sixes
M eight (of which four are vellum), N-X in eights, a-i in eights;
A and B in sixes.

THE ONLY PERFECT COPY KNOWN. Even imperfect copies are very
rare. Maskell and Weale knew but of one copy, which they described
as consisting of 251 leaves; a second which I have had wanted three
of the four leaves of vellum.

With the bookplate of "Robert Spearman of Oldacres, Esqr.
DURHAM" (about 1750).

John Richards, for whom this Missal was printed, was no doubt

a clever speculating tradesman. He brought the whole edition_to
England and sold copies, as the colophon says, at an easy price. Its
excessive rarity at present is shown by its absence from the British
Museum Catalogue, in which only Morin's quarto reprint of four
months later, will be found.

Only two other copies are recorded. One of them, which was Mr. Maskell's and is in the British Museum, is in poor condition; the other belonged to Sir Robert Adair forty years ago, but where it is at present and what kind of copy it is I know not.

COLLATION: 8 preliminary leaves (including the title, Calendar, and Benedictio Salis); folios numbered i-cxl (with some irregularities in the numeration); folios numbered i-lxiiij; folios numbered i-xlviij; and 12 unnumbered leaves. The signatures are, and a-q, in eights; r and s in sixes; A-H in eights; A-F in eights; I and K, six leaves each.

The respectable man William Chandos, for whom this small edition was printed, was evidently a tradesman seeking the patronage of the folk who could not pay the easy price of Richards' splendid folio.

Missale ad vsu ac cōsuetudinē Sarū | Beneath this title (printed in red), there is a large woodcut in stages, impressed over some Latin verses and the motto Fortuna opes avferre. non animvm potest. Colophon on leaf 313 reverse: . . Missale ad vsum ecclesie Sarisburiēsis. . in alma Parisiorum academia, opera vvolffgangi Hopylij, impensis vero Francisci byrchman, elimatissime impressum.. 1514 28 Nouembris..

Small folio, 314 leaves, printed in red and black, double columns, with the MUSIC; numerous woodcuts large and small, including the large Crucifixion, which is printed on one of the two vellum leaves in the Canon; having the margins of some leaves mended, but a perfect and good copy (11 x 8 inches) in old russia gilt Paris, 1514 80 00

the same, Lord Ashburnham's copy, with two leaves of the Canon ON VELLUM; wanting sheet b (eight leaves), also the last leaf and a small portion of the second last of the Table, but in wonderfully large and fine condition (13 x 9 inches) in the original stamped binding, rebacked 1514 63 0 0 Four other copies are recorded; namely one in the British Museum (imperfect), one in the Bodleian, and two at Cambridge.

COLLATION title and other preliminaries, 8 leaves; text, folios 1-86, 82-170 being signatures a to p, in eights, except I, b, x, y, which are in sixes; Proprium Sanctorum, signatures A to in eights and in ten leaves; Commune Sanctorum. folios 1-64, being signatures A to H in eights.

The Becket offices are, as usual in Missals, scored with ink. But the book is a fine example of ornamental typography and justifies the printer's boast of its excellence.

Missale ad vsum in | signis ac preclare eccle | sie Sa ... This title within a woodcut border and over a woodcut. Leaf 320 reverse: Missale ad vsum ecclesie Sarisburiensis . . Square imp. 8vo. 320 leaves, printed in black and red, in double columns, with woodcuts; four leaves of the Canon ON VELLUM, and one of them bearing a woodcut of the Crucifixion; fine perfect copy in the original stamped calf Paris, 1519 50 00

VERY RARE. There is no copy in the British Museum Catalogue, and only four are recorded by Weale (one of them imperfect).

COLLATION: 8 leaves; a-x in eights; A-K in eights; A-H in eights. The leaves are in most cases foliated: (8), 168, 80, and 64.

On the title there are signatures: "Johannes Vnderhill" (about 1590) anl
Georg Butler Book emi ex Ambrosio mytton" (about 1620).

160 SARUM MISSAL. Missale ad vsum insignis ac pre- | clare ecclesie Sarum. | Beneath this intitulation (printed in red), is a large woodcut of the royal arms, and under them six lines of Latin verse. Leaf 9: Oratio beatissimi Augustini. . and on the reverse the title woodcut is repeated. On leaf 10 the text of the Missale begins. Leaf 208 reverse:

The full collation is: 8 leaves; A-L in sixes; M 8 leaves; N 4 leaves; O-R in sixes; S 8 leaves; a-i in sixes; A-E in sixes, and F in 8 leaves. The leaves are numbered and the foliation is 1-118, 1-54, 1-38. Out of these 210 leaves, there are missing 53, 54, 77, part of 85, 132, 133, 134, 135, 152, 153. Besides a blank leaf which counted as 273 is cut away; and 186, 187, 188, 189, 206 and 207 are lost.

This is perhaps the most splendidly printed book ever produced in England. Only
eight copies are mentioned by Weale; all but one of them in public libraries.

Small folio or 4to. 230 leaves, printed in black and red in double columns with woodcuts and ornamental initials; two leaves of the Canon PRINTED ON VELLUM, one of them bearing a large woodcut Crucifixion; the central portion of the title-leaf cut out, and a woodcut bearing the royal arms and St. George and the Dragon, inserted in place of it (whereby a portion of the Table of Feasts on the back is rendered imperfect); fine copy in blue morocco extra, gilt edges, from the Blew collection

(Antwerp) 1528 42 0 0 EXTREMELY RARE. There is no copy in the British Museum and Bodleian catalogues, and Mr. Weale, although he gives a collation, does not specify any copy as known to him.

COLLATION: 8 preliminary leaves; Temporale etc. leaves numbered i-ciiij; Mass (Ordinary, prefaces, Canon, and conclusions) 16 unnumbered leaves; Proprium Sanctorum, leaves j-lvi; Commune Sanctorum, leaves j-xlvi. By signatures and a-n in eights; A six leaves, B 2 leaves, C 8 leaves; A-G in eights; A-E in eights, and F six leaves.

Folio, gothic letter, printed in red and black, in double columns, with the MUSIC, and a great number of very fine woodcuts, including two superb full-page designs of the Crucifixion and God the Father which are printed on the TWO LEAVES OF VELLUM in the Canon; large and fine copy in the old oak boards re-covered with calf, with brass clasps and corners; the original stamped sides preserved and inlaid, showing Tudor ornamentation, the rose, the fleurs-de-lis, the portcullis, and the letters H. R.

the same, with the TWO VELLUM LEAVES slightly shorter than the rest
of the book; a very large and very fine copy in dark crimson morocco extra,
gilt edges
By reason of the number and beauty of the woodcuts, this might be considered the
finest and most artistic edition of the Sarum Missal. It is comparatively not rare,
but perfect copies are very scarce. The two copies in the British Museum are both
imperfect.

COLLATION: Title, Calendar, Benedictio, 8 unnumbered leaves; Temporale, 140
numbered leaves; Ordinarium Misse, 18 leaves (of which the first four are numbered
141-144, the other fourteen are unnumbered); Proprium Sanctorum 72, and
Commune 62 leaves, both numbered; Accentuarium, 12 leaves unnumbered. The

signatures are, a-b, A—J, A—K (in eights, except b, H, I, K, which are each of six
leaves), altogether 312 leaves.

The initials G. M. on the two large woodcuts represent no doubt Guillaume
Merlin in his capacity as an engraver. The designs must be attributed to an artist
of far higher rank.

164 SARUM MISSAL. Missale ad vsum eccle- | sie Sarisburiensis. | 1555. | Here a woodcut of the Tree of Jesse, and under it six Latin verses recommending priests to buy the book. Colophon on leaf 320: Missale . . explicit. Lodini impressum. Per Iohannem Kyngstō et Henricum Sutton typographos.

COLLATION: 8 unnumbered leaves; folios I-Clxxvi, i-Cxxxv; and final leaf with colophon. By signatures: . A-, a-r, in eights - 320 leaves in all.

Most of the copies of this edition were destroyed early in Queen Elizabeth's reign.

Missale ad vsum insignis | ecclesie Sarisburiensis . . | . . | . . | I .. Here a woodcut of Queen Mary's Arms flanked by two pillars which bear the initials ID (i.e. John Day). Under it: Londini, Anno domini. M. D. lvij. On leaf 252 (last leaf) the entire colophon is LONDINI. | Anno verbi incarnati. | M.D.LVII.

Sm. folio, gothic letter, printed in red and black, in double columns, with the Music, and a full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion; calf, Beresford Hope's copy

1557 24 00

the same, sm. folio, Mr. Maskell's copy, containing his pencil marks
and notes of collation with other texts; calf antique, gilt edges 1557 32 00
COLLATION: Title and preliminaries, 10 unnumbered leaves; text, folios i-xc,

8 unnumbered leaves, folios Ci-CCxliii (marked by error CCxliiii); Extracta e
Compoto, 1 leaf; altogether 252 leaves, not 256 as Mr. Weale computes it. His
mistake arose from miscounting the preliminary leaves as 14 instead of 10. He is
also in error in giving the words "apud I. Day," there being no indication of the
printer beyond the initials engraved on the columns supporting the royal arms on
the title.

This was the last edition of the Sarum Missal. One year after its publication a
new order of things began with Queen Elizabeth. John Day probably had a purpose
in withholding his name from the colophon.

2 2 0

Wherwell in Hampshire, about 1320 55 0 0 An interesting volume regularly and beautifully written before the year 1340, and bright with an unusual quantity of fine gold ornamentation.-There is a Calendar on the first six leaves, containing most of the usual English names, and also some obits. On the 14 March we find Obiit Matildis de Littelton bone memorie Abbatissa de Wherewell. She died in 1340, and this was added at the time. On July 7 is added a note of the death of John de Columbers; on Sept. 18, that of Hegeline de Columbers; on the 19 October, John le Columber Miles. These are all 14th Century additions.

The Calendar has directions in French at the bottom of each page. The first is "Gardez la primere p'me apres la typhaine e de iloec cuntez v iors z le primer dimenge apres auerez septuagesme. pur elore Alleluia." Between the Calendar and the first page of Psalms, 16 leaves are inserted in a hand of about 1380; which gives the Office of the Virgin. On the reverse of the sixteenth of these leaves is written "Iste dominus Ethelredus rex fundatores. Et Alfritha regina fundatrices hujus monesteri e Wheruelle."

In Henry VIII's time the book belonged to Simon Chopper.
