FOR SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES.

THE HISTORY OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC. Abridged from the History by Prof. MOMMSEN. By C. BRYANS and F. G. R. HENDY. One volume, 12mo, $1.75.

The merits of Professor Mommsen's History are well known. They have won recognition from all qualified judges, and have long established the author's reputation as the prince of Roman historians. The need of an abridgment of this great work-a book that should present the salient points of the original in a form suitable for use in schools and colleges-is well met in this condensation by two competent English scholars. The plan of the larger work is followed, and the ideas throughout are those of Professor Mommsen, whose very language as given in Dickson's admirable translation is often used. The editors have successfully preserved the notable qualities that distinguish the original.

"I have examined it with care and find the work skilfully done. It will be a very welcome book, I am sure, to teachers and students. I shall be glad to use it with my classes and believe it will be widely adopted as a text-book in our schools and colleges."-Prof. WILLIAM A. PACKARD, Princeton College.

"It is a genuine boon that the essential parts of Mommsen's Rome are thus brought within easy reach of all, and the abridgment seems to me to preserve unusually well the glow and movement of the original. I trust that the excellence of the work will be appreciated by teachers and scholars, and by all lovers of good books."-Prof. TRACY PECK, Yale University.

Important Works by Prof. G. P. Fisher, D.D., LL.D.

HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN 8vo, with numerous maps,

CHURCH. $3.50.

"I have to tell you of the pride and delight with which I have examined your rich and most instructive volume. As an American, let me thank you for producing a work so honorable to the country."-Hon. GEORGE BANCROFT.

"I am surprised that the author has been able to put such multitudes of facts, with analysis of opinions, definitions of tendencies, and concise personal sketches, into a narrative at once so graceful, graphic, and compact.' -Rev. R. S. STORRS, D.D.

MANUAL OF CHRISTIAN EVI-
DENCES. 12mo, 75 cents.

Professor Fisher's masterly summary of the proofs of the Christian religion includes a clear and powerful statement of the historical argument, of the internal evidence of the Scriptures and the intrinsic excellence of the Christian revelation, and answers modern objections of a theoretical character in a satisfactory and convincing manner. "By all odds, the best treatise on the evidences of Christianity that we know."-The Examiner.

"It touches every leading point of Christian evidence, and meets every important objection."-The Churchman.

Text-Books on Mental Science by Ex.-Pres. James McCosh, D.D., LL.D.

PSYCHOLOGY. I. The Cognitive Powers. II. The Motive Powers. 2 vols., 12mo, each $1.50.

The first volume contains an analysis of the operations of the senses, and of their relation to the intellectual processes, and devotes considerable space to a discussion of Sense-perception, from the physiological side, accompanied by appropriate cuts. The second volume continues the subject with a discussion of the power of the Conscience, Emotions, and Will.

"This book is written in a clear and simple style; it breathes a sweet and winning spirit; and it is inspired by a noble purpose. In these respects it is a model of what a text-book should be."-Prof. WILLIAM DE W. HYDE, Bowdoin College.

FIRST AND FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS. Being a Treatise on Metaphysics. 12mo, $2.00.

Dr. McCo h regards this work as the copestone of what he has been able to do in philosophy. It is destined to rank as the most important of a 1 his works.

"The things noticeable in this book are its fulness of form, its simplicity of diction, its frequent and happy use of illustration, and its steady flow of clear and ample thought.

"The deep truth so ably presented by this grand metaphysician in this study of principles, and the satisfaction to be found in his system of realistic philosophy, render this work one of those valuable contributions to intellectual progress whose advent is an important event in the progress of the human race."-Boston Traveller.

An Introductory New Testament Greek Method.

IAM R. HARPER, Ph.D., and REVERE F. Weidner, D.D. Svo, $2.50 net.

By WILL

CONTENTS: I. Fifty Inductive Lessons based on the Gospel of St. John.-II. 1. A Critical Text of the Gospel of St. John. 2. A Literal Translation of John 1-4. 3. A Vocabulary of the Gospel and Epistles of St. John. 4. Lists of wolds occurring most frequently.-III. Elements of New Testament Greek Grammar.

"I thoroughly believe in the inductive method which has shaped the work and anticipate for it large usefulness and success. It is carefully edited and printed, and supplies an evident lack among the rudimentary text-books for the study of the Greek Testament."-Prof. J. H. THAYER, Harvard University.

"A book likely to be widely popular with those who desire to know Greek enough to read the New Testament and would come directly at it. The method has two notable features which all teachers of the classics-and of languages generally-would do well to mark the mastering of word-lists which comprise the ordinary vocabulary, and the memorizing of passages of the original text."-Prof. SAMUEL R. WINANS, Princeton, N. J.
