THE Compiler ventures before the public with a second volume of" Miscellanies, selected from the Public Journals." The ingredients are arranged in a more formal manner; but it is uncertain whether this arrangement adds any thing to the value of the book, or whether every article is placed under its most appropriate leading title. The fourth division, it must be confessed, appears barren; but it should be recollected, that the barrenness of obituary notices, does not increase their claims to preservation. Two distinguished individuals deceased, within a short period before the compilation of this volume was undertaken, of whom no notices have yet been published, (at least, the compiler has seen none,) that he wished to transfer to his collection. It is to be regretted that no one, suitably qualified, has given to the public the characters of LOWNDES and PINKNEY. |
