¶ At the Communion of the Priest.

WHAT a delight would it be for me, O my God, to be one of those happy souls, whom a pure conscience, a holy life, and an affectionate piety, permit to approach every day to thy sacred table. Grant at least, O Lord, that I may aspire thereto, by a spiritual communion, and thus satisfy in some measure the ardent desire I have to receive thee. If the hunger I have for this heavenly bread,-if the ardor I have to be admitted, could be considered a preparation, my heart is ready, O Lord, my heart is ready. As a hart pants, after a long course, for a fountain, wherein she may quench her thirst, so my soul thirsts after thee my divine Saviour. O living bread, that comest down from heaven to give me life, satisfy the hunger of my soul to be nourished by thee! O fountain of living Waters, that spring up to eternal life, satisfy the thirst of a soul that cannot be quenched by any other! Grant that the ardent desire I have to receive thee spiritually, may supply for my unworthiness to receive thee sacramentally, and through thy infinite goodness, impart to me a share of the happy effects of a good communion. If I am not so happy as to partake in reality of thy sacred body, animate me at least with thy spirit: give me a share of those graces which thy precious body and blood would have produced in me, had not my infidelities rendered me unworthy to receive them. May thy assistance, O Lord, enable me to overcome the obstacles which hinder me from communicating as often as I desire. For what can I desire in heaven, what can I henceforth love upon earth, but thee my God, and my portion for ever.

After Communion, and during the last Gospel.
How can I make a suitable return to thee,

O bountiful Lord, for all the benefits thou hast heaped upon me, and especially for the grace of assisting at this divine Sacrifice, a favor refused to many others less unworthy than myself! But what ought to be my gratitude to thee for giving me so ardent a desire to receive thee, and thus in some manner to supply for sacramental Communion! By this spiritual communion, thou communicatest to me some share of those favors bestowed so abundantly on those pure souls, who are admitted to thy holy table. Be thou for ever blessed then, O Saviour, for so many favors. Great ought my fidelity to be this day in thy service, and in the observance of thy holy law! Yes, I am resolved rather to die than to violate it by any voluntary fault. My eyes which have had the happiness of beholding thee hidden under the sacred species, shall henceforward abstain from all looks that may disturb the peace, or sully the purity of my soul. My ears that have heard thy divine words, shall be shut against all conversations unbecoming Christian sanctity. My tongue which has pronounced thy praises, and called upon thy holy name, shall not be profaned by worldly conversations. My heart in fine inflamed with the fire of thy holy love by assisting at these sacred mysteries, shall be no more led away by earthly desires: so that as I am wholly thine, grant, O God of my heart, that in future I may only live for thee. Amen.
