To support his case, he invoked the help of German chemistry, when elaborate analyses seemed to prove that the wax of the bust was of a consistence now unknown. But the core of the bust proved to be a worn-out pair of Victorian check trousers, and the new Lionardo had to take a back shelf.

München, 1888-1912 A unique opportunity for acquiring this truly monumental work, for such a complete and splendidly bound set, and in such fine condition, has scarcely ever happened for sale either here or abroad.

One of the special features of the work is, that the illustrations were not made from already existing plates, but from wholly new photographs, taken whenever this was possible from the originals themselves, and in all other cases from plaster casts specially made for the work.

The above is an absolutely complete set to the end of 1912.

This magnificent work is undoubtedly the finest of its class that has ever been published; it approaches finality in its thoroughness and exhaustive character as a work of research, and the exquisite nature of its chromolithographic illustrations makes it worthy to be possessed wholly on account of their beauty as works of art.

On LARGE PAPER it forms a singularly beautiful work.

'The present edition is much more than a mere re-issue. It has, in a great measure, the character of a new work. With the assistance of the Cav. G. B. Cavalcaselle, Sir Joseph Crowe had, for some years before 1896, been engaged in preparing a new edition. When this work was interrupted by his death he had entirely rewritten more than a third of the book, and had collected a great store of important material relating to the later periods. We publish the authors' text and notes as they left them... In the notes marked with an asterisk we have added the results of our own researches, and such genuine discoveries as have been made in recent years.'-Preface. See CALVALCASELLE, ante, for the Italian Edition.
