In all the newspaper and other polemics on the origin of the present state of German morals, no one has ever thought of Felix Dahn, who by his glorification of the Germanic hordes in his novels (especially in his popular Kampf um Rom) has probably contributed more to their reversion to savagery than either Carlyle, H. S. Chamberlain, Treitschke, or Nietzsche. 131 DANNENBERG (Hermann) GRUNDZÜGE der MÜNZKUNDE, 2. vermehrte Auflage; with 11 plates, 12mo. cl., 2s 6d (p. M. 4)

'Bernal Diaz is a most true and literal copyist of nature. He transfers the scenes of real life by a sort of daguerreotype process to his pages. He is among chroniclers what Defoe is among novelists. He introduces us into the heart of the camp, we huddle round the bivouac with the soldiers, loiter with them on their wearisome marches, listen to their stories, their murmurs of discontent, their plans of conquest, their hopes, their triumphs, their disappointments. All the picturesque scenes and romantic incidents of the campaign are reflected in his pages as in a mirror.'-W. H. Prescott. 'One of the greatest monuments of English historical scholarship. It not only surpasses in importance every former work on the period, but for the purposes of the general student is of greater value than all former works combined.'— C. K. Adams.

It was the first work to point out the continuity of English institutions, and the little impression made by the Norman element on the national life. In this respect it is opposed to Palgrave (q. v. post).

Because the modern High Germans have gone back to a barbarism lower than that of their own forest-dwelling ancestors, some of our wiseacres are now prepared to strafe ourselves by denying our own Low German forefathers, Bede, Oswald, Alfred, and Alcuin presumably among them. It would be interesting to hear Mr. Freeman's ghost on this characteristic half-educated bizarrerie.
