The last-mentioned Tract contains the controversy which grew out
of a statement made by Mr. (now Lord) Brougham, reflecting on the
ignorance of the Civil Law displayed by the Bar of Scotland. It is be-
lieved that the papers which support the learned Lord's view of the
matter were written by James Brougham, his Lordship's brother,
and that they had the benefit of his supervision. Browne was assisted
by Dr. Irving.
