Justices of Peace, Nottoway County.

Deed Book 2, p. 28, shows that Richard Bland, William Watson and Richard Dennis were justices in 1798. Deed Book 2, p. 67, shows that Robert and Francis Fitzgerald were justices in 1798; p. 75, shows that Freeman Epes was a justice. at the same time; Pincham, Williams shown justices in 1799. (Nottoway Deed Book 2, p. 95.) Daniel Verser and Isaac Winfree, shown justices in 1799. (Nottoway Deed Book 2, p. 166.)

Deed Book 2, p. 175, 179, shows that Richard Bland, Samuel Morgan and Dabney Morris were justices in 1800. 1805, Freeman Epes, John Bass, Edmund Wills, Daniel Verser, gents., justices; also Joseph Dupuy, Abraham Hatchett, Richard Epes.

Inventory shows 2500 books in library, 16 mules, 7 horses, 40 head of cattle, 10 oxen, 120 hogs, 107 sheep, 80 bbls. corn, 30,000 pounds of oats, 3000 bushels wheat, 88 negroes; had large property in Mississippi. ATKINSON, ROGER, Olive Hill, Chesterfield County, 1829. Will. Executors, Brother Thomas, and son Dr. Thomas P. Requests executors to make sale of my three tracts of land in County of Chesterfield, purchased of Thomas E. Gary, Thomas B. Manlove and Peter Andrews" etc.; also "all my stock,

crops and plantation utensils on my Hyde and Dan River plantations". . . . to pay his debts. Gave daughter, Sally B. Jones, all lands on south side of Hyde River upon condition her husband, Dr. Joseph Jones, pay for 200 acres of it at not less than $11.00 per acre; also negroes previously put in his possession To son, Thomas Atkinson, "one-sixth of my estate for use and support and education of the children of my son, John Atkinson.' (This Thomas Atkinson was Dr. Thomas P. Atkinson, as appears from subsequent clauses.) One-fifth part estate given in trust to Thomas for the benefit of children of daughter, Caroline E. T. Mayo. Residue of estate to children, Jane B. Pryor, Robert Atkinson, Lucy Pryor and Nancy P. H. Atkinson, in equal portion, having already advanced to "other three children equal property." Gives his wife, Sarah, in pursuance of marriage contract, life estate in 22 slaves. Speaks of his wife's sister Robertson. Chesterfield Superior Court Deeds, Wills, etc., since 1809, page 50.

ATTWOOD, JAMES, 1747. Deed. Conveys land on Flatt Creek and Frank's Creek, adjoining Isham Vaughan and others; also near head branches of Buckskin Creek. Amelia D. B. 3, p. 6.

ATWOOD, JAMES, 1762. Deed from James Atwood and Mary, his wife, of Amelia, to William Jennings, of Hanover, for two tracts of lands of 200 acres each; the first tract beginning in Robert Moody's, now James Oliver's, line where it crosses Deep Creek, etc., being the lower part of 600 acres bought by Atwood of William Hudson, 1748; the second two hundred acres spoken of as lying above that two hundred acres which James Atwood gave to his son William Atwood. BACON, TYREE G., 1830. Will. Executors, Nathan Ward and brother William Bacon. To son James, "tract he now lives on, called Jennings"; daughters, Mary, Sally and Eliza; Petronella Marshall seems to have been another daughter; grandson, Herbert T. Bacon. Inventory and appraisement show 17,809 dollars. Nottoway W. B. 6, p. 186.

BALDWIN, SAMUEL, 1793. Deed from Samuel Baldwin, of Charlotte County, and Elizabeth Baldwin, of Nottoway, to George Baldwin; of Nottoway, land on West Creek bounded by John Blankenship, William Rogers and John Gilliam, being part of tract late the property of William Baldwin. Nottoway D. B. 1, p. 385.

BARDWELL, Nottoway. Owned whole tract got from Col. Burke's estate. Deed from him to Bradshaw, et als, 1891. Bradshaw became purchaser, Feb. 1897. Judge William Hodges Mann, trustee.

BARKSDALE, WILLIAM J., 1859. Will. Inventory appraises personal property at $103,457.00 Amelia W. B., 1859.

BELL, WILLIAM, 1793. Deed. William F. Bell and his wife, Frances, convey water grist mill and land on Flat Creek, known as Bell's Mill, to John Mann. Nottoway D. B. 1, p. 304. William Bell, prior to 1794, sold his mill on Flat Creek to John Mann, and Mann sold to Booker, of Prince Edward, and half to another party, 1794. Nottoway D. B. 1.

BELL, WILLIAM, 1795. Deed from William Bell and wife, and Peter Ellington and wife, to Daniel Jones, of Nottoway, land on Flatt Creek bought by Bell of William Watson and Archibald Yarborough; mill now owned by Owen Smith, of Prince Edward, and others. Speaks of James Dupuy's (Jr) corner and Pulliam's Road, etc. Nottoway D. B. 1.

BIBB, WILLIAM, 1789. Deed from William Bibb and Sarah, his wife, of Prince Edward, to Augustus Watson, of said county, land on Harris's Creek. Prince Edward D. B. 8, p. 158.

BLAND, EDWARD, 1831. Will. Will. Wife, Rebecca; son, William Richard; daughters, Ann A., Martha B., Rebecca, Sarah, Frances and Virginia; nephews, Richard E. and Peter B. Jones, who with sons-in-law, Henry C. Worsham and George W. Harrison, were made executors. Inventory and appraisement of estate aggregates 34,000 dollars, and includes "Abbeville," "Springfield" (with grist mill), and "Round Top" plantations. Nottoway W. B. 6, pp. 257, 443.

BURTON, ABRAHAM, 1736. Will. Lived on Appomattox near mouth of Deep Creek. Gives son, Abraham Burton, this tract. Amelia W. B. 1, p. 135. (Son Abraham died, 1758, leaving this land to his son, Peter.)

CHAMBERS, ALLEN, 1798. Deed to Abner Watson, of Prince Edward, for land beginning at Rutledge Road, etc. Witness, Drury Watson, Jr. Prince Edward D. B. 11, p. 287.

CHAMBERS, JOSIAH, 1785. Will, dated 1781, probated 1785; executors, John Watson and Charles Allen. Order of court shows that John Watson, Sr. was one of the witnesses examined in court as to execution. Wife, Mary; sons, Josiah, John and Allen; daughters, Elizabeth Allen, Betty Ann, Susannah. CRADDOCK, JAMES, 1868. Will, dated June 28, 1868; William Cross Craddock appointed executor, but Joseph M. Gills qualified in $700. Leaves daughter, Mary O. Hatch, "one dollar, and no more"; leaves son, William C. Craddock, remainder of estate, including a tract called Louis's on Vaughan's Creek, and all the interest he has to a tract of land in Ohio County, Kentucky, containing 1500 acres (patented by William Cross Craddock).
