Pessimism-continued.

...

[ocr errors]

Sully (J., LL.D.) Pessimism: a history and
a criticism...
NOTE-Reviews the history of optimism and pessimism
and interprets the terms in their widest meaning. Although
modern pessimism is the special subject of inquiry, the
author contends that this doctrine can only be understood
by help of other forms of pessimism, that these again must
be studied in connection with the corresponding forms of
optimism. The work is not confined to these two opposing
views, but takes up the underlying question of the worth
of life and of the world, which each of these theories seeks
to answer in one particular way.
