"

[First edition. Complete and in almost spotless condition. The first edition of Holbein's Dance of Death contained only 41 woodcuts, which are supposed to have been executed from Holbein's designs by Hans Lutzenberger, as one cut bears the mark HL. Some bibliographers have endeavoured to prove that there was an earlier edition, published at Basle in 1530, but no one has ever seen a copy of such an edition, and Douce denies that any such edition ever existed. The Lyons edition of 1538, of which this is a copy, is the first known printing of Holbein's work. This edition contains the dedication to Madame Jehanne de Touszele, which is not found in any of the later editions.]
