Scotland. Visied, collected and extracted forth of the
Register, Edinburgh, Imprented be Robert Waldegrave,
Prenter to the Kingis Majestie, 15 Martii, Anno Dom.
1597 (519), Oct. 10, Dowell
£100

[This book was evidently in the council chamber of the Stuart kings since the latter half of 16th century. It has the royal Scottish arms on the outside binding on both sides, and is filled with woodcuts of each monarch, beginning with James I. of Scotland. It is curiously ornamented, pieces being cut out and coloured pieces of fine quilled velvet or satin substituted in their places. It seems to have passed into the hand of Lord Drummond when at St. Germains in 1698. The title-page is in manuscript, by Waldegrave, the royal printer. It has various MS. minutes of appointments and records of events. The first entered is apparently a record of the death of Darnley, the second the baptism of James VI. at Stirling Castle; it has also the old Scottish oath of allegiance on a fly-leaf. There are three portraits of Mary, Queen of Scots, contained in this volume. The portraits of James IV. display unmistakeably the hair shirt and chain which, it was rumoured, he wore as a sign of penance at his father's untimely end.] Scotland.
