211 ESOPUS. Vita per Max. Planudem, gr. Fabulæ, gr. Vita et fabulæ, lat. redditæ Rinucium per Thessalum. Fabulæ selectæ gr. et 1. ad verbum redditæ, edente Bono Accursio. At the end, Bonus Accursius pisanus impressit, without place or date, 4°.

The first most rare edition, printed at Milan about 1480. According to the signatures it is divided into three parts. Part I. begins without any title on the recto of the first leaf, Bonus Accursius—J. Fr. turriano salutem plurimam dicit. Leaves 2-32, Esop's life by Planudes in Greek. Leaves 33-70, Æsop's fables in Greek (to the number of 144). The reverse of the 70th leaf is blank. The whole without signatures, catchwords and pagination, twenty-five lines in a page. Part II. leaves 1-32, Vita Esopi- -e græco latina per Rynuciu facta. Leaves 33-59, 100 fables in Latin by the same. The whole has the signatures, a-g, and twenty-five lines in a page. Part III. of thirty-eight leaves, with the signatures, A-E, containing a second letter of Accursius, and a selection of fables, Greek and Latin, in two columns. A perfect copy ought therefore to contain 167 leaves in all, but sometimes the second part, sometimes the third part, is wanting.

It is so printed that the Greek text may be separated from the Latin translation; so that both are sometimes met with separately. The contents and order are accurately stated at the end. The text of the Aldine is the basis of the two following editions.

This first and very scarce edition begins without farther title on the recto of the first leaf, with a sonnet, [S]api chio son Esopo o tu lettore: &c. followed by these two verses,

Da Gioanni aluise e da compagni sui Con diligentia bene impresso fui. On the reverse is a large woodcut. The recto of the second leaf has the following inscription in capital letters: Accii Zuchi

in Esopi fabulas interpretatio per rhythmos in libellum Zucharinum inscriptum contexta fœliciter incipit. Next is a Proemio in two sonnets, and then, after the inscription in capital letters, Lepidissimi Esopi fabella, the fables themselves (66 in number); each of which, besides the metrical Latin translation, is rendered (or story), the other of the moral, and ilinto two Italian sonnets, one of the material lustrated with a woodcut. (The later editions contain 67 fables and 134 sonnets.) The last are not altogether without merit. On the recto of signature P 3 is the following colophon in capitals: Impressum Veronæ Die XXVI Junii. M.CCCC.LXXVIIII. After this follows a Cancionetta, Canzon morale, the Ave Maria in verse, and a Tavola de le preditte fabule. The whole consists of 160 leaves, or 320 pages.—Another edition, mentioned by several bibliographers, Verona, Alvisi, 1478, 25 Jun. 4°. is doubted. A fine and very scarce edition, with tolerably good woodcuts; without signatures, catchwords, and pagination, in Rocharacters; containing 166 leaves (the 42nd is blank), whereof the first begins with an Italian letter by Fr. del Tuppo allo illust. Honorato de Aragonia, and the last contains a list of the fables and a register. Besides the Latin metrical translation, there is also one in Italian prose, with an allegorical, moral, and historical comment (Tropologia, Allegoria, Exemplum). At the beginning, the life of Æsop in Latin and Italian. 242 - Aquila, 1493. fol.

Still more rare than the preceding edition, with the signatures a-y IIII. The first leaf contains a woodcut, which serves as a title, with the inscription, Virtus omnia vincit. In the second leaf is the letter of Fr. del Tuppo to Honorat. de Aragonia, then the life and fables of Æsop with woodcuts, which resemble those of the preceding edition, but which deserve notice more for the beauty of their bordering than for the composition of the subjects. On the reverse of the last leaf but one is the following colophon: Fr. del Tuppo.... in vitam Esopi fabulatoris traductio materno
