nicis regularib. Augustinianis, scil. Hospitalariis, Templariis, Gilbertinis, Præmonstratensibus et Maturinis sive Trinitariis. Lond. 1661.Monast. Angl. Vol. III. et ult., additamenta, nec non fundatt. s. dotatt. diversar. ecclesiar. cathedra lium ac collegiatar. continens. Savoy, 1673. fol. 3 vols. with plates.

This very seldom complete work is historically important, and is at the same time greatly sought after on account of the plates by Hollar and King (in England it produces as much as 50 guineas).

Vol. I. has 25 leaves of preliminary matter (including a title-plate, a printed title, a half-title, a genealogical tree, and a representation of a Benedictine monk), and 1151 pages, which terminate with a specification of the typographical errors. It contains 61 plates in the following places, p. 2 (2 plates), 18 (4 plates), 20, 22, 24, 26,

28, 32, 38 (4 plates), 50, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62 (2 plates), 64 (2 plates), 84, 88, 90, 108, 120, 154, 164, 166, 170 (2 plates), 172 (2 plates), 174, 176 (2 plates), 184 (2 plates), 186 (2 plates), 191, 198, 220 (2 plates), 222, 282, 306, 371, 372, 406 (2 plates), 512, 611, 695, 733, 882, 949.— Of this first vol. there is also an Editio II. auctior et emendatior. Lond. 1682. fol. with 16 leaves of preliminary matter, and 1159 pages, with inferior impressions of the plates. It is enlarged with an index locorum in 4 leaves, and is on this account conjoined with the original edition, with which it in other respects completely coincides, although it is really a new impression.

Vol. II. has 12 leaves of preliminary matter (including the title, half-title, and the representation of a canon regular of St. Augustine), 1057 pages, and 28 unnumbered leaves (4 of them index). Besides the representation of the canon there are 17 plates in the following places; p. 136, 148 (2 plates), 366, 460 (this, called the plate of the hospital, is particularly scarce), 489, 504, 517, 573, 589, 652, 755, 783, 831, 870, 890, 941. There are also copies of this 2d vol. with a new title of 1673.

Vol III. is particularly scarce, and contains 3 leaves of preliminary matter, 392 pages, leaf of crrata, and 218 pages. The first set of figures contains 24 plates, one of which, p. 368, is printed in the text, and the rest are in p. 114, 115, 128 (2 plates), 180 (2 plates), 216 (2 plates), 257 (7 plates), 297 (4 plates), 368, 375 (3 plates). The 2d set of figures has 6 plates, viz. p. 1o (2 plates), 42, 87, 175, 195. There are also copies of this 3d vol. with a new title of 1683.

The plates are only numbered in some copies, and consequently often not inserted in their proper places. This however is of no consequence provided that none are wanting. Copies only of the 1st and 2d vols. are known on large paper.

A new edition in English, with considerable additions and improvements by J. Caley, H. Ellis, and Bulkeley Bandinel, Lond. 1813, etc. fol. 4 vols. has smaller plates. (In Nos. at 21. 12s. 6d., and large paper 51. 58.)

Containing the land and ground book of England, which William the Conqueror caused to be drawn up between 1080 and 1083. The printing of it commenced in 1770 and was finished in 1777 (consequently there are also copies with this date), but the chief title and the glossary were first added in 1783. Peculiar types, accurately imitating the hand-writing were cast for it, which were burnt in 1808 with Nichols's establishment. This small school-book was one of the first attempts of the typographical art, it had indeed been previously often xylographed. Concerning the oldest editions see Fischer Essai sur les monum. typogr. de Gutenberg: here are only the later editions:

1) Moguntia, Pt. de Gernszheym (not before 1467), fol. with 55 lines in a page. A fragment of 4 leaves on vellum is in the Royal library at Paris. The description in Lambinet, I. 104 etc. The types have a resemblance to those of the Bible of 1455. This has given occasion in Dibdin's Decameron, I. 331 etc. to the most groundless conclusions. Consult Hermes, I. 237.

2) Rom, Schweinheim and Pannarz. The first attempt of their press, hitherto unknown. According to Dibdin Decam. I. 353 note, a defective copy is to be met with in a private Italian library.

3) Without place or date. 4°. Gothic letter, 12 leaves. It begins, Partes orationes quot sunt, it ends, Explicit donatus ethimologisatus. The types have a resemblance to those of the Bible of 1462, and of Cic. Offic. of 1465.

4) (Nrb.), F. Kreusner (about 1472). small fol. 22 leaves with 24 lines and missal letters, without signatures, catchwords, and pagination. It begins, (P)artes oronis quot sut; and ends in leaf 22b, Im

pressum p Fridericum Kreusner. On vellum in the Town library at Nüremberg.

5) Without place or date. 4°. Gothic letter, 36 leaves with 20 lines, and the signatures A-E. At the end, Finit feliciter, printed in red.

6) Donatus minor optime correctus. Without place or date. 4°. 14 leaves. It concludes in leaf 14a: Explicit Donatus.

7) Without place or date. 4°. 24 leaves with 25 lines, and the signatures A-D. Page is a woodcut representing the teacher with the inscription, Donati editio prima. The text begins on the 2nd page, and ends in the 3rd line of the last leaf with Finis.

8) Without place or date. small 4°. 32 leaves with 20 lines and the signatures A-D. It begins,

(P)artes orationis quot sunt.

The letter at the beginning, P, is a woodcut representing the teacher and scholar. It ends in leaf 32a, after the 12th line, with Finit Feliciter.

9) Without place or date. fol. Gothic letter, 22 leaves with 25 lines, without signatures, catchwords, and pagination. Leaf Ia line I is Artes orationis quot sūt? Octo. Leaf 22a the last or 15th line is est volens. The types have a resemblance to Pfister's Bible. There is a description of it in Dibdin Bibl. Spenc. III. 60 etc.

10) Donatus minor. Without place or date. fol. Gothic letter, 18 leaves (the last blank) with 31 lines, without catchwords and pagination. The description in Renouard Catal. II. 29.

11) Renouard possesses a fragment of 2 leaves on vellum, printed with movable Gothic letter types, as yet unknown.

12) A fragment of 3 leaves in fol. printed with movable Gothic letter types, and with 28 lines (as yet unknown) in Dresden. Those initials which are distinguished by their separate form have a resemblance to the initials, although much smaller, in the context of Jenson's Latin Bible of 1479.

13) Without place or date. 4°. Gothic letter, 32 leaves with 20 lines, and the signatures a-f.

14) Editio prima Donati grammatici. (Aug. Vind.), per J. Schäffler, without date. 4°. 16 leaves (the last blank), with the signatures A-B and 33 lines.
